I have always wanted to hunt them, but I thought you had to make specal arrangements (like a big game hunt) I never knew they were that close! what does it take to hunt p dogs(I recently bought a bushmaster AR and am still trying to figure out why) If I were useing a fixed power scope what would work best(Im thinking 10X)what would be the best time of year(might be a streach but what about a members hunt next year)

I would be more then happy to setup a members hunt next year. They are starting to slow down this time of the year as it is cooling off. I still hunt them here but I would not take a guided customer this time of the year. I shot them with just about anything I have on hand. I prefer a adjustable obj and variable power scope. But you can get by with anything. 10x would work just fine. We guide hunts and I can get you within open sight pistol range or up to 1,000yrd plus. I would highly recomend a minimum off 500 rounds per day and multiple rifles so you can switch off and let barrels cool. I have had customers that have had well over 750 comfirmed kills in a day and that is with lunc breaks and goofing off. If you were at it from sun up to sun down you could take 1500 if you make your shots count. I prefer bolt guns over the AR as I save all my brass and the Bushy can get a bit crazy on launching hot brass. We have set benches and also a 360 degree rotary bench that sets in the back of my dodge. This allows the shooter to set about 3 feet over the cab and shoot at anything that moves ;D On really special days a friend of mine lets us take out his full auto belt fed 1919 and we can let loose with the chain gun. I personall like to set and chunk 750grain 50 calls downrange with my AR-50

Don't shoot em all, leave some breedin stock. Give me a shout sometime maybe we can all hook up and go blast something, hogs or . Will be busy with deer, then pheasant, duck, goose, and so on for a while. Odie and I got a new place we ain't had time to check out, and I been lookin at another and spring is a long time away. Nice to see you here Bennie. I was a bit tired of the PM forum. There was too many people there that just waited to slam other posters. That antelope post of mine was a terror. I'll always send me posts to a lawyer to have them proof read before I post them there. As always you are more then welcome to come down. I have been feeding them and getting ready for some p-dog fishing next month

Just curious if your not a resident of NM are you required to purchase a non-residnet license for P-Dogs? I grew up south of Lubbock and had several good p-dog towns to shoot at, but now that I am in Abilene there just isn't any around. Me and my Dad have spent many hours shooting p-dogs and I sure miss it.

Where south of Lubbock? I know of some dogs around brownfield area.
I will do some checking on the license this weekend. I want to give you correct information.
I will say that I am not advocating it, but I have never known of an out-of-state person that bought a license. Nor do residents. I would think that it requires a small game license, but give me a bit to varify a "legal" answer. I always have a current license for fish, small game, foul, and deer so I haven't done research lately.

I grew up in Tahoka and lived north of there about 6 miles. Right across the road was the T-Bar ranch and that place has some huge p-dog towns. On occassion the ranch foreman would let me and my Dad go out and shoot a few. They use to be super strict about hunting there and I figure since its the same ranch foreman there now it still is. I figure the only reason we got to go was becasue my Dad was a sherriffs deputy and he helped them out alot when their cattle would get out. If the day ever comes that they allow anyone to varmint hunt..............I will be there with bells on. That ranch is overrun with coyotes!!

Ok I can now give you the "legal' scoop on hunting varmits in NM. Unprotected or nongame (coyote, ground squirrel, pigeon or rock dove, prairie dog, rabbit, skunk, sparrows, starlings): Residents may hunt without purchasing a license. Nonresidents must have a nongame license or they may hunt nongame if they posses any other current year New Mexico hunting license (e.g. a cougar license or an elk license). If the nonresident has a furbearers license, they do not need a hunting license. The nonresident license is $35.00 for 4 days and can be bought over the counter at any license place ie. gun Store, Walmart, Kmart etc. Here is a link to a few informative pages. www.gmfsh.state.nm.us/PageMill_TExt/FAQ/faq1a.htmlwww.gmfsh.state.nm.us/
