Ok Guys.....got a poser here for ya. I have this coyote I killed yesterday....not interested in the hide, but I am interested in the tail. I cut the tail off, and pulled the flesh/bones out of it, and am left with a nice tail....BUT how do I preserve it? Joe

Just put non-iodized salt on all of the fleshy side and let it sit for a week or so. You may want to change the salt after the first 24 hours. Get yourself an inexpensive tail stripper and tail splitter. This makes very short work of it. Then just shampoo it to get rid of the stink and blow dry it with your wife's blow dryer. Bob

You can try putting the salt in with a soda straw. You need to get it packed solid though......

Hooter, Any of the trapping supply companies carry them. Here is a link for both: www.sullivansline.com/sline/furhand/pelting.asp They are $3.95 & $2.50...get a couple when you order them. I like to keep some spares to give to new callers when I take them out. Bozo has a tail puller he can show you how to use now!!

If you want it to last along time, because bugs will eventually destroy it.After salting or during preferably, apply some 20 muleteam borax it works as a moth and bug proofer and it also acts as a mild preservative. Duane

Put the borax "in" the tail or "on" it??
Do I pack it in like the salt??
I want it to last a long time and not drop the fur.....

Joe, You would put the borax in the tail,or other words the flesh side you can also dust the hair side if you like.If you salted it and it has been salted for a few days and its dry you should be safe from the hair falling out.It also helps if you cut a small slit in the tip of the tail to keep any moistur e from staying in the tail which will make the hair slip or fall out in time if it cant dry out.Im geussing by what I read that you didnt split the tail. When you get another one and you dont have a tail stripper you can run asharp filet knife up the tail and split it that way, then you could salt it easier and you could even tan it by mixing 1/2lb.salt&1/2#pickling alum into a 1/2gal. of luke warm water and soak for 3days and then rinse and hang to dry and shake it out every so often while drying to fluff it up so it dries nice its a crude tanning method but its works good for tails and it would have alittle more flex and should'nt break over time.(note:if tannig put tail in tan while it is still quite damp,if you put in a dry tail the tan wont penetrate.) Tanning it this way would make it last many years.I hope this helps and goodluck.
