::)Wow! I bet you guys are running around in your SPEEDO'S this morning! Got a taste of that cold stuff in the mid 60's! Had 9 weeks boot camp for the USN at Great Lakes; it got to -8 six days before Thanksgiving, and never got above +10 for about 18 days. The day after we left boot camp, they had to close O'Hara airport because of a blizzard! Then I get to San Diego, where they have their first snow in over 40 years; and then I get stationed in Hawaii, where it got to 52 degrees one morning. Those folks were absolutely miserable! It's all part of this life on earth, and the Master's plan! ;D

Boy was I wrong, they said it got down to -35*F in elk WA. That is just 22 miles north of here. My inlaws live there. It had gotten to around 26 below here. But I hear its suppose to gut up to FREEZING on Wednesday. Boy what a heat wave! Thats an increase of around 50 degrees. Don't know if I can take it!

Our weather has changed dramatically. There is little snow down low now, but up high it was nasty yesterday. I only saw one critter yesterday, a buck that I jumped out of its bed. Nothing was moving around. This morning it was much worse, so I came back down. I decided to stop on our CRP fields and hunt deer sheds. I crossed the fence to go down in some brushy draws just up the creek from our house a half mile. There is still patchy snow in the timber. I found a large cat track. I laid my cigarette lighter next to it for a pic. It is a 3 1/2 to 4 inch track. It was coming down the creek toward our house, and was made in the last 24 hours. I also found the remains of a small elk that I estimate was killed in late summer. I figure it was a lion kill, but no way to be certain. The bears had found it and scattered it all over the hillside.. I brought one of the legs back to see if a friend of mine can determine the age of the elk. A most depressing development has occured today. I am self-employed, and I had a message on my machine when I got home. One of my customers needs my services for a couple of days. Bennie mentioned that "W" word the other day and got me all upset, now it has jumped up and bit me on the butt. I will go through my photos tonight. Bob

One of three pics of the cat tracks this morning pic of one of the elk's legs. It is about the size of a large deer, but you can tell it is an elk because it still has some of the dark brown leg hair attached

I talked to my neighbor, Byron, yesterday. He said the small elk I found yesterday was about four months old. This has been very upsetting to all of us. I got photos of a small bull elk calf on Memorial Day, May 26 last year. More than likely, the elk I found yesterday is the same one. If not the same one, then one just like it. Being four months old, means it was killed in September last year. We have lots of bears around here in September because of the blackberries, wild apples and wild plums. Bears are fully capable of catching and killing an elk this size. We will never know what got this elk. Byron was shed hunting on his place yesterday. He found a lion kill. It was a whitetail spike buck. The buck had been drug into the brush and covered with debree. Bears will uncover a kill like this and finish it off. So we know this buck had been killed after the bears went to sleep this year. We hunt sheds every year until the grass gets too tall to find them. We usually find 10 to 15 kills each year that occurred over winter. Dee is very upset about the small elk. She has an 8x10 photo of the elk on the wall in her office at work. I should not have told her about what I found yesterday, but she thinks I spend too much time hunting bears and cats. I just wanted her to know WHY we need to keep the numbers of these predators in check. Bob

Rick, It looks like I will be working this week-end. I have to do some repairs on a rental property. The renters do not want some stranger in their house while they are at work. Week days are better for me to get out, if you can make it then. Bob

Bobcat, when I talked to him last night, it was 20 below zero. Bad winter. He is committed to a calling contest on Feb 7, and has a helicopter scheduled for March !st for aerial gunning. So, if he can come, it will be between those dates, depending on the weather, condition of the mountain passes and such. He is having a bad year, and thinks he will only get about 300 coyotes. He has 220 so far. Bob
