the 270 for long range shooting? I sold one to a friend a couple of years ago and he has never shot it so I know I can get it back. I never shot it beyond 150 yds while I had it. It is a Model 70 SS and I really liked the gun but don't know how this round performs at prairie dog and coyote distances. Whadda ya'll think?? Thanks for the info in advance!! ;D

;DHey Kellyg... I'm shooting a Smith & Wesson .270 (that's right) and it has always been my go to gun. I've had it sighted in the past three years at 200 yards shooting Hornady Light Magnum 140 gr. BTSP, and have not seen any lack of performance at that distance. We elk hunted with two guys in New Mexico shooting the same ammo. One of them shot and dropped a 800 lbs. bull at 357 yards! "From my cold dead hands!" ;D

My first dedicated p-dog gun was a 270 because that is what I had. The 90gr ballistic tips are deadly, but the gun has a bit to much recoil and report in my .02 for all day dog shooting.
I know plenty of people that use a 270 for ALL of their hunting. small-large game

There seems to be an ongoiong 'discussion' about the pros and cons of the .270 versus the 30.06. One shoots a flatter bullet , the other is more versatile because more bullet weights are available. And on and on.
Heck, they both work well.

Kellyg a 270 would reach out there and touch a pdog at extended ranges but the recoil and quick barrel heat up would not make that rifle a true pdogging weapon. You could definately use it for the extra long shots in between the short shots with your .223 or 22.250 Savage that you should have. Short being anything under 700 yards:) Ole DeadEye has a Weatherby Accumark 270 that will ever so gently tap a pdog from the next zipcode.

According to the legendary Jack O'conner it is the best rifle ever made. He killed everything with it, I can't remember all the different critters he took with his, but the list I'm sure would be extensive. It would heat up rather quickly in Pdog shootin as does the 243 and others, but as Odie stated it could be your in between gun.

Kellyg besure to carry your survial gear, sharp knive, extra ammo,(hand gun close confrontation),and a first aid kit. You will need at lest 3 long guns, and 1500 rounds per weapon. Don't let them p-dogs get close. Then you depend on hand gun knive and then hand to hand combat. Now that is a Odie & Bennie story.

Its like (retired) Texas Senator Phil Graham said at an NRA convention several years ago -
"I have all the guns I need, but I don't have all the guns I want."

My Dad used to hunt those Viscious PDogs in N. dakota. He brought 2 .223 with him. I guess the action must get hot and heavy.

1st. Cav all MIkie does is get a five gallon bucket with icewater in in and dunk his barrel till it cools off. As for accuracy his will shoot around trees and bushes.
