I personally like the .225 Win. I inherited it from my grandfather and took it to SD and had a blast shooting Pdogs.

I generally stay out of these "Best of" discussions, thinking there's no such thing. They're just about all effective for something when used properly, and lots of people manage to do right well with cartridges that many would think are odd choices for a particular purpose. I think it's best to ignore the peer pressure to have the newest, hottest and flashiest, and especially pay no attention to the ad-driven gun magazine hoopla about the latest ultra-super-short-magnum wonder round. Firearms are a very mature technology. There's nothing any new cartridge will do that can't be done just as well by one 50 years old or older. Pick from the time-proven standards and you can't go wrong. Bottom line is, you should have confidence in yourself and what you choose.

richochet....
what. does all these new short fat super ultra mag mileormores rounds do for u. i reckon i am old fashion, ( think i am old enough to be old fashion) i just cannot seem to get excited about any of them> i love the old 270wcf, the 300 win mag and the weaterby too. i found nothing wrong with the 243 win. or the 7mm rem. mag. i suppose i am to sentimental and tend to favor the classics. oh well, enough of this............
have a good one.

all depends all time favorite 30-06 best all round
Just bought a new .223 when you dont need the power of the '06
6.5x55 another good round with not as much kick as the '06
And of course the old thurty-thurty... no matter where you go most stores will have a least one box on the shelf.

for coyotes i prefer my ruger .243.I've been shooting coyotes with it since I was about 13 yrs old(and thats a ways back)For deer and other such animals I prefer my rem. 700 .270 I find it very versatile too. When I hunt contests I usually go with the .270 much less chance of saying oops he got away lol.

Gotta go with ya on the .270 Partsman....been shooting one for longer than I care to admit.....an old and ugly Win model 770 ( Yes the cheaper one) with an old K3 weaver, post and crosshair reticle, both made in 1968.....I have killed many nice bucks, many coyotes....and a bunch of other varmints with it.....it is my "go to" gun. I have a gunsafe full of other rifles, many of which I love (including the 30/06, have 7 or 8 of those including my Garands)- but if my life depended on one shot and I had a choice.....the old 270 would get the nod

If "I had to chose " 5 (heavin forbid), it would be tough to throw out a lot of rifles. 1. 22LR 2. 223 3. 250-3000 4. 308 5. 338 Win Mag
To make it even more puzzling, if i had to choose 2, it would be 1. 223 2. 308
And even worse, if I had to choose 1, it would be 1. 260
Go figure on my reasoning for those choices...LOL
And I didn't get to mention my "favorite" deer rifle, the 40-70 Shiloh Sharps....or my favorite coyote rounds, the 22-250 AI and the 22 Dasher....or my PD guns, especially, the 17 MK4.
I don't need 5 guns......I need 5 vaults.
