Giant and sought after cat, PLEASE endow us with thy wisdom on the use of Nosler 40 gr, ballistic tips in a Rem 223, AR-15, 1 in 9, 20" barrel. What would you load if you like them?

I'm not the Bobcat....but, if you are talking about a big kitty with a long tail.....leave the AR at home...or...at the very least, use a proper bullet!
The 40 grain bullet is fine for bobcats.....but I wouldn't shoot a big cat with it unless that's all I had at the time!
Varget is my powder of choice in my 223 calling rifle......

Hey Mark, I am probably not the best one to answer this. I am a bolt action man.......so far! With that said, my load for the 40 gr. BT's or V-Max bullets in .223 is 27.5 grains of Varget. I use Win brass and Rem. 7 1/2 SRBR Primers. This is what my Model 7 loved. If you want to play with some other powders, you might give W-748 and the new R-10x a whirl. 748 is always good in .223 and the new R-10x was made especially for lighter bullets in the .223 and 22-250. I am sure you will get some more input. Good Hunting, Bob Wisdom? Now that is an entirely different matter.

Great Site! I have not messed with their powders much, but this looks like the time to start. Out in the empty, vast waste land of West Texas (feelin' down today) Wally World is our best bet on the Reloader powders, give them a whirl and see what's up. Add the Alliant bunch to favorites, Thanks Again!

Mr. BobCat: Forgot to ask, how long has the R-10X been out, if it just got released I will have to go to another much high priced store to get it!

Hey Mark, I believe it has been out a little over a year now. Your best place to buy powder and primers is at the gun shows. Powder is usually $3-$7/lb. less expensive. Bob

Bobcat, I went and got the stuff, the Reloader 10X was too much, but after our showing in the Snyder hunt this weekend I have to have something to take my mind off of it. Was that a dissmal 24 hours for our team. I would have rather taken a beating! Gonna try this and shoot 0.25 groups and get to feeling better, OH, PS that is at 200 yds, of course.

Hey Mark,
Let us know how you like the R-10x. I am still very partial to Varget for this as I said. You may want to try some 50gr. V-Max's as well.
Good Luck,
Bob

Hey Mark! There's a gun show in Odessa this weekend. BTW, I've been loading for several .223's for years, actually have not tried Varget yet, because I haven't needed to try a new load. My Les Baer AR loves WW748 and 50 gr Nosler BT's. Also AA 2015 powder is great. I know some other guys who use Varget and swear by it. It should do very well. I used a Colt AR for a while and it shot pretty good with Sierra 50 gr Blitz bullets and AA2015. I always loaded the oal as long as I could, and still load them in the mag easily. Of course, you need to know that your chamber is not on the short side. I'd bet that someone at the gun show will be selling powder and stuff. I usally buy powder from one of several suppliers, and have it shipped to me. Of course, with the hazardous material charge, you would need to buy more than a couple of pounds to make ordering powder much cheaper. Later, Bob (gunsetc)
