I decided to go hunting this afternoon, instead of continue my routine of laying on the couch and watching hockey.
My Dad and I left home around 4:50 and made the 20 minutes drive to a spot we have permission to hunt.
We walked up to an alfalfa field that has had deer in it in the past, and there was deer tracks all over the road for 1/4 mile before the field, including one large set. As we got to the field, we saw 2 mulie does about 150-200 yards away, feeding. Then a farmer drove by, but the deer did not spook. We decided to check out a recenty logged area in a woodlot, so we walked that way, and the 2 does spooked and bounded off. We went to the new clearing, then came back out to the main alfalfa field we saw the 2 deer in. Nothing was out in the open. So, we waited, and a little while longer, around sun down, a mulie doe came out about 305 yards out and began to feed. Maybe 10 minutes later, I heard something in the bush about 60 yards to my left. A couple seconds later, a small whitetail doe came out and fed into the field 80 yards from where my Dad and I were standing. Then I see this black hulking form by the mulie doe, and a big cow moose enters the field. I glance to my right, and see a deer out in the field, and when I glass it, I see a large bodied mule deer, and then it moves it's head and I can see horns through the crappy binocs @ 450 yards, so I tell my Dad I am going to go kill it, he stays behind....
I can see the deer is feeding, and I make my way as quietly as I can towards him. I get to about 350 yards when a young cow moose walks out into the field about 30 yards further than the buck. I figure she is gonna bust me as they've done on previous hunts but luckily she just feeds and doesn't f*** up my stalk. I get to about 250 yards, and I accidently bash my shooting sticks and my rifle stock together. Nice hollow thud of fiberglass on fiberglass! He looks at me, and all around for like a minute or so, then continues to feed again. I've lasered him at 250 yards, and I've snuck about 10 steps closer, then he looks at me again. I'm not sure if he sees me, as I am in full camo (Mossy Oak Break Up). I figure 240'ish is good enough, and I sit down and get the rifle sitting in the shooting sticks. My scope is turned almost all the way, to 12X I think. He is standing slightly quartering away, pretty much broadside though, standing facing left. He is looking at me, and I remember the crosshair dancing alot. So I take a second or two to calm down, and then when the crosshair settles a bit high on his shoulder, I touch the trigger, and I hear the whump of the bullet impact. I look and he is flattened!!
I run up to him after yelling to my Dad to go get the truck. The cow moose finally runs off when I am about 75 yards from her. My buck is not quite dead, he is moving his legs and head a bit, and blinking. I don't want to blast him if I don't have to, but I don't want to see it suffer or even have it get up on me. So after waiting like 6 or 7 minutes, he starts to look like he's got someplace else to be, and his right front leg hooks under him and his head starts to rise. I figured I better plug him, so I sorta point from 5 feet and give him one behind the shoulder. Ka-Boom. Now that takes the fight out of him! He sprays some nasal blood for a few seconds, then is dead pretty soon. A couple minutes later my Dad shows up in the truck and we load him and take him home to dress.
