Last hour of the last day of Oklahoma's muzzleloader deer season.......and I had a doe tag left.....
With a south wind this afternoon, my stand choices were very limited....I decided to hunt a powerline right of way in an area that I have called and killed several coyotes.......I sat down at 4:30 on the north side of a big, steep draw on the east fence of the property.....it was so warm (76 degrees) that I really didn't expect to see anything.....at 5 minutes 'til 5 I saw a doe stand up out of a brushpile across the fence and on top of the next ridge south.......I watched her feeding for several minutes hoping she would cross the fence and head down the draw......I got the laser rangefinder out of the pack and took a reading.......194 yards......well, she headed toward the fence but she wasn't getting any closer......I decided if she crossed the fence that I would shoot......she went under the fence, made two steps and stopped in the only opening in the scrub oaks that I could shoot to......the opening was only 3 feet wide but that was enough.....I had a rock steady rest (it was actually a really BIG rock!).....I held the crosshairs where my drop chart (taped to the scope) said they needed to be and squeezed the trigger.....the smoke rolled and the doe disappeared.....I heard the bullet strike.....but I wasn't sure if it hit the deer or a limb.......I thought I could see the deer on the ground but I couldn't tell for certain.......I was reloading when another doe came out.....she walked toward the fence looking where the other doe had been.....when she made the fence, she flagged and ran back toward the brushpile.......I figured the first doe must be laying there......I made mental note of a white post in the fence near where the deer had stood and used it as a reference so I could find the spot......I hiked down into the draw and climbed back up the other side....walked toward the white post and found the doe laying exactly where she had been standing......hit right through the shoulder....a perfect shot! I turned and took another laser reading back to the rock I had used for a rest......200 yards on the money!
I had worked with this muzzleloader at long range expecting that I might need to stretch it out a bit because of the area I was hunting earlier this week......I shot my buck at 45 yards.......then, I go to this property for a quick evening hunt.....where I usually hunt deer with a crossbow....and I end up shooting a doe at 200 yards........funny how things work out........
