First of all, welcome to the board, FB. This is a good durn question you have posed. Hope there are a bunch of responses on this too........ My first shot on a gobbler was about 5 years ago over near Bracketville and was at 45 yards (I paced it off after the fact), with 3 1/2 inch supermag and #4 shot with a full factory choke in my Benelli. It knocked him down and rolled him over in the dirt and he laid there shaking for about 20 seconds, then he rolled over and hauled butt. and I ain't seen him since........ I then went out and bought a superfull (turkey) choke but still limit shots to 40 yards based on that experience. (As a strong personal opinion, I never will intentionally maim an animal. I want a clean and immediate kill. ) Anyway that is my dos centavos worth.....

I like to limit my shots to 35 yards and under. I have shot one turkey over 40 yards(47 yards) that was hung up. I killed him stone dead. I know the gun/ammo combo is lethal farther than 35 yds. through patterning, but I would rather call them in and shoot at 35 or less.

I prefer not to shoot further than 30 yards. I have a hard time judging distance after that. I try to keep my shots <25 yards if I can. Sometimes this doesn't work, so I've gotten more confident at 30. No further though!
There's always another day and another turkey.

I prefer to shoot inside 30 yards, and have been fortunate enough to never have to shoot over 15 yards. 2nd turkey I killed was 7 steps from the gun barrel and still charging hard. Talk about a lobotomy!

I've shot turks from near ground zero out to past 40 yards, but 40 is bout my limit anymore, as someone said earlier another turk another day. The challenge is to get em close, I've had them step on me while proned out, now that is gettin em close. The most I ever called in at once was six. last year I shot two with one shot, shooting 3 inch mag 4's, first one was at five steps the other immediately behind him at seven, took the first ones head clean off. They are still one of my favorite things to hunt.

well lets see............... i prefer that my shots be on the near side of 40 yards......i do not use a 3in. shell so i like em fairly close.... about 12 years ago we were huntin on the quinn ranch outside of brady, tx. i got exicted and shot one that measured 55 steps.( i am 6' 1" so it could have been an honest 55 yds.... i dont know......i was usin a 1100 12 ga. with a modified barrel with remington duplex 4 x 6........knocke him for a loop. did not go anywhere.....just flopped. i wont attempt to push a gun past its limits now.....but like i said ....i was excited....

Like everyone else said the closer the better but if it don't look like he's gonna cooperate I feel okay out to 50yrs if he's in a good opening. Killed one in Fl. last year at 51 steps, he didn't go nowhere but down.
