Two years ago I was hunting in Rocksprings just east of Del Rio and I went into a blind. There was a BIG Ringtail cat sleeping inside. It scared the heck out of me. I never saw one before. It was not mean but It did not want to leave. I had to yell at it and shake my rifle. It took off after a 30 second stand off. The only nasty thing about it is it pooped everywhere in the blind. Kind of smelled like bat guano.

I have only seen one in the wild, and it was near Rock Springs also. It came sneaking around our campfire one night. I would love to call and mount one. They are a unique animal. Bob

We used to be on a lease halfway between Sonora and Del Rio. You turned off the highway at Dolan Creek Rd. and drove west on the dirt road 24 miles, through 10 bump gates. It was part of one of the Whitehead Bros. ranches. Lots of Texas history happened in those parts. This area is about 50 mi. west of Rocksprings. We had plenty of ringtail cat experiences.
I had to shoot my way out of one particular pre-dawn encounter in a box stand. Neither one of us would give ground. I won...eventually. It was hillarious.
I should have had one mounted. I will the next time.
We currently visit a ranch near Carta Valley (same general area) to predator hunt, but have not seen any ringtails yet.

They do seem to like elevated deer stands, I've had the same thing happen twice open the door to the stand and have to take it away from a ringtail. Use to be a bunch around here, but as with several other things , theres not as many as before. They are pretty reclusive though, so there are more around than what a person would believe, especially in the hilly rocky country.

Hey Y'all! If you want ringtailed cats then I'd suggest the Junction (TX) area! I've hunted down there for a few years and have run them out of blinds and treed many of them! I saw a pretty big one when I was night hunting for pigs awhile back-should've popped him but I was carrying a .45-70!
Next month I'll be going back down there with my .22 for ringtails as well as the cannon for the pigs. I'll post pics of any ringtails I get.
Can anybody recommend a good taxidermist for small critters?

Hey Bennie, if I can work that out I'll let you know! It's kind of a weird situation down there right now-bad blood between the lease manager and the landowner. Luckily the landowner and I get along pretty well and he understands that I play by his rules! It's one of those 'bad apple spoiling the bunch' kinda stories I guess. We'll see how it all pans out...
Heck, maybe I can round up some people and lease the place from him myself! It's a great place, 900ac., a cabin with plumbing and stove, lots of critters. It borders the Rio Bonito Ranch and that's a low fence border so you can imagine that there are some weird exotics that show up from time to time. Would you believe I actually saw an ostrich one time? That would've been a weird mount!! ;D

Pyledriver, My group have lost our lease from no fault of our own, the guy we were leasing from lost his lease, he had the hunting and grazing and was sub-leasing the hunting to us. So if you need four people we may sure be interested. I use to hunt north west of ozona, like the country.

i thought the ringtail was found in central and west texas. we found some in the robert lee area and quite a few down ' round eagle pass on the los quatros ranch. but i never ecpected to see one in oklahoma......sure nuff, i was coming down mt. scott in the wichita mt.s and my headlight caught some eyes shining. i backed up and pulled my pick-up closer for a good look and there he (or she) was a sure nuff ringtail. i showed him to my boys and told them that is the first on i had ever seen north of the river

We have them out here in California also, can't kill em though. I was hunting down by the Colorado river one night and saw one in a tree, cool looking little critter. I read where they are almost totally nocturnal.

We have a house at Lake Limestone in Groesbeck. Along with seeing coyotes, bobcats, deer, grey foxes, and skunks in the yard i have seen one ringtail. I also have a friend that lives in brady that shot one.
Rem223PA...
From the little I know, I have heard that they will come to a high pitched short range call like a coaxer.
