Lochi, one of our new members, is from South Africa. He has helped several Americans do some predator calling in his country........something that is not done very often. He has also helped them with inexpensive plains game hunts outside the "normal" hunting fraternity. Lochi, Tell us a bit about calling black-backed jackals and spotted hyenas in South Africa....... Bob, Thanx for the opportunity to share. I have to admit that I learnt most of my predator calling on my computer and not in the African bush. Or let's put it this way: I have sped up my calling experience substantially by reading postings on sites like Shade Tree and others. Around here are very few serious predator callers. The odd sheep farmer might buy a tape with jackal howls and perhaps an external reed, which he doesn't know how to use. Hunters might have the odd fun evening and call opportunistically. In Dec 2001 I back-packed to Arizona for the annual coyote hunts of the two main predator boards at that time. During those 10 days I made many friends and learn a lot about day-calling. I have done a web site few years back with tips on how I manage to hunt at low cost and for free. Follow this link and go to "Predator Calling" www.affordableafricanhunting.co.zaThere are pictures of our common varmint and low priced game. Our coyote-equivalent is the black-backed jackal (Canis mesomelas like in Bob's pic above, but much smarter than your C. latrans!!!!! ). The caracal is a stealth cat slightly bigger than a bobcat that looks like a mountain lion. Our Cape fox (Vulpus chama) is not as much a problem to the farmers as is the jackal. I call mostly at night, doing say 5 stands of half-hour each from the truck. Average success rate would be about 1 jackal per evening. Happy to handle questions and promise to post frequently. This board has the potential to go places (saw some huge names on here!) Shoot straight. Lochi. Ps. Commercial plug: I also run a little part time outfitters concern, guiding budget-conscious American hunters on affordable plains game and predator calling safaris. You'll find that on my other site www.affordableafricanhunting.com

Thanx Kellyg! ICMCumin, unfortunately I don't have any of those. Lately I kill few stuff myself, rather take friends along and let them experience it. Seriously thinking of making a video, but for now have to also train my new Jack Russell how to track, etc. etc. ..... time problems! But I have another plan! Listen carefully: You buy an air ticket to South Africa and arrive with all your video parafanalia. You and I make a video that will be unique on the shopping list of Americans. How's that for creativity!!!!!!!! Can it work? Lochi.

That would be a once in a lifetime experience, Lochi. Been a lot of places but have never been to Africa. That IS the ultimate hunting experience.
Making a video would make it that much better.
Now if I hit the lottery or get bitten by a rattler in Walmart, I could afford to get over there now. ;D Otherwise have to wait one more year to get two kids out of college.
