Soon to be brother inlaw shot a fairly large Audad this weekend. Its his first exotic and is going to get it mounted. If he sends me photos I'll post them. I cant wait to make a couple of these trips. They were hunting down by Fredricksberg? Not sure about the spelling. An uncle saw a 9 point Fallow but didnt shoot.

Aoudad are high on my Texas trophy list also. I want to do a free-range hunt for them in the Davis Mountains near Alpine and Ft. Davis. I would love to combine the Aoudad hunt with calling in a lion.......

I did 2 free range Aoudad hunts last year (Feb for 5 days, march for 3 days) with a guide. weather was terrible the first trip. On the first hunt saw some about 300-400 yards away on the last afternoon, but none I decieded were big enough to shoot. The 2nd hunt nothing shootable either. Ended up shooting a nice Mouflon ram though. Worked my butt off in those hills out by Del Rio. Was a very challenging hunt. I still need to find that Aoudad someday.

Doc, How do you go about getting on one of these? "Enchanted Rock on a Texas Draw hunt" Is that one of those you pay $2 to put your name in the hat. I tried that 2 years ago on 5-6 different one. Ended up very confused on what I was going for..lol Steve

Yeppers, it the one where you put the 3.00 for the chance adn when drawn you pay the 50.00 fee to hunt it. I have been very lucky on those hunts,I was only doing the kids hunts ,but now I put in for everything and get drawn about every 2 years.

I took a nice Ram off of a ranch between Alpine and Ft Davis the same ranch I shot my lion. Made for a nice mount. I grew up in that area so I know it well. I shot both with a 22-250. Dave

Hey Dave,
That is a great aoudad! That is exactly the area I want to hunt for mine! I think that going after the free-ranging animals out there is one of the best big game hunting we have here in Texas. That is great country.

Thanks fellas. Yeah, there are plenty out there, as a matter of fact, most ranchers consider them to be a nuicance and don't want them on their ranch. They seem to be bad about tearing up fence. One ranch used to let you shoot all the ewes you wanted for very little cash, if any at all, but most have jumped on the band-wagon and figured out they can make good cash on the rams.
The ranch I hunt doesn't allow any hunters except family. It is 75 sections in some of the most rugged terrain there is. I got lucky because I know the wildlife manager that lives and works on the ranch. His job consists of thinning out the predators and feeding the deer and elk. What an awesome job to just hunt all day everyday and get paid for it.
The better Auodad Rams seem to come from south of Marfa and for some reason cheaper too. I know of a couple of places that charged $800 or so for a ram, and most places around Ft Davis and Marfa were getting $3000 for a trophey ram then another $500 for every inch over 30.
