Any of you know any good WMA's in East TX to score an Eastern on, may be heading to hunt with a friend in Louisiana this spring, but while I'm passing thru, thought I might hunt a couple of days in East TX. Any ideas??? Thanks for the help.

Shane:
I keep hearing that there are lots of turkeys on some of the WMA's but that the hunting pressure is so heavy that its near to impossible to get one to come in to the call. Turkey hunting can be frustrating enough when you're out by yourself.
I don't mind spending a few $$$ to hunt on my own and not have any conflict with other hunters - and no fear of getting shot .......
IMO, if you really want to get a bird, spend the bucks and go somewhere the conditions are more controlled than a WMA.
Just my two cents worth.

Plan on hunting Missouri or Kentucky in 05. Just wanting to get a few opinions....but you said what I have heard....then again.....could test my calling skills....I like to think I'm good ;D...that would sure put them to the test.

Yeah, I think I'm pretty good too, but sometimes the turkeys don't think I'm worth a bucket of spit!
Its amazing how an animal so dumb can be downright wary and contrary sometimes.......

Hey ICM.. I know what you mean about calling too. I've never been able to use the diaphram calls, so I've used slate or box calls. One that I've had real good success with has been the MOSS DOUBLETONE box call. It has a real unique sound, one of the best box calls I've used. Check it out! mossdoubletone.com/hunting.htm ;D

Well I took up Turkey hunting this spring and with people like shane helping me over the internet I got my first Turkey.
I had a buddy go with me to call for me because all I could do was make them gobble but not come in for almost a week, so I got him to call for me so I could learn first hand. After about and 1 hour of him calling and not getting any results I told him this is how I had been scaring them, and with that I got down on my mouth call and had them answering in a flash, but the look on my buddy's face was priceless, Hell I think I scared him too...lol
But it worked and I got my frist Bird 19 lb's, 9 1/2 inch beard and 3/4 inch spur's.
Hey Shane looking foreward to scaring you too this spring with my calling....lol
It's between a choking chicken and a dying buzzard....lol

Hey JD - haven't heard of the Moss Doubletone, but will check it out.
I have used the Lynch box for the past six years and really like it. I set up a Jake and a hen decoys in near mating position and it seems to bring the toms in to them.
When I am sure the tom has seen the decoys I shut up and let the decoys do the rest.......

New to the board here - hunted the Angelina for 3 days last fall, and they are some tough birds. You have to get out and scout and find where they are frequenting before you plan to hunt them, no cherry picking on these birds. We located and hunted the same tom for three days in a row, he would call to us in the morning and sound like he was coming in and then just walk off while gobbling his head off. Dang frustrating. Last day he flew up 20 yards behind my hunting partner, he'd come in to our yelps at dusk perfecly, but never made a peep and we didn't see him. We weren't outlaws enough to shoot him off the roost and we bumped him getting out of there and never saw him again.
I'll be back next year. To be sure, it is a very challeging hunt and any Eastern turkey from a Jake to Big boss tom taken on a Tx WMA is a true trophy. I was close to central texas, I've heard bird densities increase the closer to the red river you get, so if you are interested next year, I'd say look toward that north east corner of the state.
Good luck and let us know how you do!
