I have been out on several occasions late in the evening with zero success even though we have even seen the gobblers.
Twice they have seen the decoys and gobbled and hussled off in the other direction. Once they heard the call and did the same thing. The third time, about five or six big gobblers went right past the decoys (out of shotgun range) and went to a feeder that was about 100 yards off. They totally ignored any calling and were eating the corn as fast as they could.
Does anybody know of a late afternoon strategy out there that works - other than getting within a few yards of a feeder (which I would prefer not to do)?

:(ICM... late afternoon I try to set up near water or if I know where their roost is, I'll set up in that general area. Typically, they are getting one last bite and drink before the roost up, and it's really hard to change their pattern. In most cases, they've done their duty with the hens during the day, and they are headed home! You almost have to set up an ambush to be successful! So, if they are going to the feeders in the late afternoon, you need to see where they go afterwards, then set up your ambush for the next day!

ICMCumin, follow the words jdickey just gave you, watch where there going after feeding, setup between the spots and ambush them when they come by, may try some soft feeding purrs and soft cluck. Forget the deeks at this time, I have seen them as you said, see the deeks and haul butt the opposite way.
