The dove is one of the trickiest targets in wing shooting. They dive, duck, twist, turn and sometimes simply haul butt. Because of this shotshell manufacturers just love the dove season. On an average how many shots does it take you to drop one dove? Now be honest!

Well i would have to say 2.5 is a good #,,,,since i shoot auto loaders i have been know to take a 2nd or 3rd shot at a bird that i have allready hit but most of the time it is 1 or 2 shots per bird

I shoot an auto as well, TD - and shoot in streaks. Its really crazy - I can go 5 or 6 shots without hitting anything and then get a couple of doubles right in a row that were by far more difficult shots/
When I was a young man (25 or so) I lived in Eastern NC. I was shooting my Beretta o/u ( both pretty tight patterns - a full over a modified) and got 12 doves with 14 shots - by far the best shooting I have ever had with doves. I went over to pick up the last bird and killed a rattlesnake as I was searching for my bird.
I guess the rattler rattled me because I missed everything else the rest of the day........ Shot over a box of shells at them.
Shows you the importance of the mental aspect to shooting.

Hey Texpppr -
Don't worry about the percentages, focus on your shots and try to determine what you did right or wrong with each shot.
Finding and correcting bad habits is tough in the field so I try to hit a skeet range several times before the dove season rolls around (and also sometimes during the season too) to sharpen things up some. (If I was smarter and / or richer I would hit the skeet range a couple of times a week year round.)

The key is to keep shooting and not become intimidated by missing.... I was dove hunting in Mexico a few years ago and missed so many at the start of the hunt that the bird boys were snickering at me behind my back. I warmed up a little later it seemed like I couldn't hardly miss there for a while - they were complaining about running too much..... Paybacks are hell! ;D

5'8" is big, but the part about 2 inches between the eyes got my attention! Durn - that's HUGE! I would have probably shot him three times and then reloaded and shot three more - just to make sure - and no would know what the measurement was between the eyes, due to lack of evidence.....

Hey Guy's
you'll started something that I love and that is to wing hunt. Come on down I most of the time will shoot 80% or better in the field. Oh I also shoot in AA Sporting Clays matches and it has and will help guy's shoot better in the field also.

8-)According to the poll, there are 2.5 shots per dove. Question I've got, is how do you shoot half (.5) of a shot. Isn't it all or nothin; or which half hits and which half is a miss? Or do some of the pellets get half way there and drop? I give up! I really know, just teasin!

I am streaky. If there are a lot of birds I shoot much better! One hunt I was less than 50%, and on another I was 12 for 18. I put 2 shots per bird on the poll though.
