Well Like Pogo used to say, "Friday the 13th came on Saturday this month".
The goose hunt started out bad before it began - got a note from Mrs Buzzsaw that Buzzsaw had surgery on Wednesday and couldn't make the hunt. (Shucks, Buzz - can't believe a couple of stitches would hold a tough guy like you back!) Was looking forward to meeting another member of the posse, but I guess it will have to wait til the next time. Bad omen #1
We got to Larry Gore's place and it looked like camo city there at 4:30AM. The place was loaded with waterfowlers - kinda like a Moslem walking into Mecca during the Haj.... We had to wait for three guys - they didn't get a wakeup call from the front desk and overslept - bad omen #2.
We got out to the field and started across a ditch - one guy didn't wear rubber boots as had been highly recommended and got his feet wet. Bad omen #3.
As it turned light, we could see and hear hundreds if not thousands of geese in the air - all around us, but always out of gun range. It was windy and cold and damp - just like I like it! No such thing as bad weather - just bad gear...... Kept thinking that conditions were in our favor.
We set out about 800 rags. Got back to our shooting spots and were laying in the weeds waiting for the geese to come in. We see one of the first flocks heading our way and low and behold there is a bunch of hunters in the next field over that decided they wanted to try to shoot geese at about 80 yards or so. The geese were heading down and we may have had a good shot at them. Nothing like a bunch of skybusters to start the day out. Bad omen #4.
Another flock was heading our way and they got spooked by some duck hunters to our right.
By this time, the bad stuff that was happening weren't omens - they were circumstances.
We finally got a few shots later in the morning. I got one and one of the other guys got one. You think of all the preparations, the long trips that some of the hunters made, the money that was paid out for just two geese.
It was not the most productive, nor the funnest hunt I have ever been on, but what the heck. I still enjoyed myself.
At least my dog had a good time. She knew we were going hunting the evening before and acted like a puppy - she had a blast getting out in the field while we were putting the decoys out, fetching the geese and then picking the decoys up. Dusty didn't even have to pay a cent either. She was the star of the show when she went out and grabbed those two honkers - and she knew it too!
What the heck - I'll probably put together another hunt next season...... Probably ducks or doves though - or maybe even quail. I think geese is too hit or miss for something like this.
