Almost lost my dog!!!

On Christmas day, the ICM family was packing the food in and Dusty was getting a bunch of the table scraps. (For any of you with labs, you know that they could win the Oscar for "Best Dog in a Dramatic Begging Role".)

The next day I took her to work with me and all was fine for the first couple of hours and then I noticed her throwing up. It happened again a couple of hours later and then again and again. When we got her home, it happened one more time and it looked like there was some blood in the stuff this time, so we loaded her up and took her to the 24 hour vet up in Conroe.

I thought it was a steak bone causing all the problem so they took an xray and found no bone residue inside her. Then they took a blood test and determined that she had pancreatitis - inflamation of the pancreas. It is caused by too much fat intake and can be fatal if not treated soon enough! And my poor wife was a basket case by this time - she loves that dog more than she loves me if the truth be known.......

They kept her overnight and gave her a couple of bags of liquid solution intraveinously. We took her to her regular vet on Saturday and he gave her another. She is back to normal again now, but her days of corn dogs at the Sonic and egg rolls from the Chinese takeout restaurant are over and done now.

She is on a strict diet now, as recurrances are frequent and the disorder can be fatal..... Man I love this dog and don't want anything to happen to her....... What I thought was okay for her could have killed her!!!

Be careful with your dog - feed them the proper foods and keep them trim and fit.

Heck, I'll probably go on a diet too !! and I love them corn dogs and egg rolls too!!!!

My dog loved chocolate. Really she loved anything sweet. I remember one night I was up late. I went into to the kitchen for a snack.. I started peeling a Bananna and all of a sudden this head pops up.... Uhhh do you want to share..
We gave her table snacks and in her last year of her life we gave her regular people food. She loved hambuger rice and peas. She was a good dog and worth the trouble.

Close Call Jim! Glad to hear the pup is allright. We have to remember they aren't people, as much as we treat them like a member of the family, or they try to be one.

Hey Sormi, just a little info, I was informed by a Vet. that chocolate is a poison to dogs, and yes they love it.

I had heard the same thing about chocolate, but had given it to Dusty (in limited quantities) in the past with no apparent ill consequences.

I have been home sick today. Dog and I have been "feasting" on raw carrots...... She looks thinner already. I still look like an apple on a stick.

Man I wish I had a steak and baked potato......

:)Hey Guys... chocolate for dogs is a BIG NO, NO. It will cause seizures and perhaps death!

The bestest dog I ever had was a big black lab "Major"! Smartest most affectionate dog I've owned in my life. I picked him out as a pup and we were pals for 8 years. He was a big part in our family.... I've never tried to replace him because I thought that much of him!

Just as an update, Dusty has no obvious effects from hr bout with pancreatitus. As stated in another thread, we went hunting this past weekend and she did great. The fields were really muddy and she had no trouble going strong all day long. (The three hunters had to stop periodically to catch a breath.)

There is nothing wrong with her nose either - she located about every bird we went after - really helped out on her first snipe hunt ever!

Since the incident, she has been on a diet and has lost a lot of weight. She has more energy than she has had in several years - its really good to see the results.

Overfeeding your pets is a huge mistake - one that won't be made again at Casa ICM.

But that's life for a dog... they just can't get a good human any more! ;D

The dog would have gone another couple of hours. Can't speak for the other two, but that beer tasted awfully good after the slog through the mud.

First chance I get, will invite several of you to the lease to shoot crows, coyotes or maybe a hog..........

???Well, I dunno.... never tried to hunt with them before... but there's always a FIRST...

Course, if ya just can't get the leather couch out there, one of those big leather chairs with a big foot stool would work!

Hey ICM,

That was close!! I have always fed my dogs dry dog food. I had an uncle that raised champion Setters and he really drilled the difference into us about people vs. dog food from a young age. I am glad it has all worked out ok. I have also had my Vets tell me the same thing about chocolate being a real no no for dogs.

So.......when are you taking her hunting?

Am going to try for one more hunt this season, probably fairly close to home.

Sure would like to get up near Hobbs for a combo hunt with BW and DE (so I can teach them how to shoot a bit better LOL ;D ;D ), but it doesn't look like I will be able to ($$$ and time are really limited right now)
