Bush Begins New Year By Hunting Quail With Father
(Falfurrias-AP) -- President Bush today shot quail on a South Texas hunting trip -- but he ate beef.
Bush encouraged all Americans to eat beef -- despite concern over mad cow disease.
Bush went hunting with his father, former President George Bush of Houston.
The president later said he thinks he shot five birds during the outing near Falfurrias.
Bush says Americans should feel comfortable eating beef while Agriculture Department officials try to prevent any mad cow outbreak.
That comes in the wake of the discovery of an infected Holstein in Washington state.
The president says his personal New Year's resolution is to strengthen his knee, to alleviate the pain that has curtailed his exercise jogging.
The Bushes had lunch with U-S envoy James Baker of Houston, who was secretary of state in the administration of Bush's father.
