OK. you've got about $1000 to spend on a rifle and a scope. What percentage do you spend on rifle and what percent do you spend on scope and why? Do you buy a cheapo rifle and put a swarovski scope on it or a Weatherby Mark V and put a Tasco on it, or something in between?

Well ICM,the way I doing it is that if the gun costs 500.00 the scope iss going to be in that range also. So I will say 50% gun,50% scope and 20% Acc.

I'ld rather spend more on the scope you can always work on the rifle

;DI'd spend it on the rifle... most good rifles will only appreciate in value, especially if it is some sort of collector's edition. I'd say 85% rifle; you can still get a fair scope for $150.00!

I agree with coondawg. A rifle only shoots as good as the optics. Most of my rifles are worth less then the optics, but 50-50 should be good. You can get a nice rifle and scope in the 500 per range.
What caliber are you looking for and what are you going to do with the rifle? I always have rifles in and out of our shop and I can keep an eye out.

Is it the scope or the gun what about the SHOOTER Doesn't matter how good a shooter you are with poor optics you don't have the edge. Just like a chain only being as strong as the weakest link. I still vote that the optics are the highest "initial" investment. As said it is much easier to work on improving the rifle and shooter, not much upgrades to a scope except getting a new one

I have been watching this dialoge for a few days, but didn't want to put my 2 cents worth in because of fear of ridicule. I go with a decent rifle and a moderately priced scope, but then what can I say I'm a frugal kinda guy. lol
