Hey Y'all, I had the pleasure of spending some time in the field yesterday morning near Flatonia, TX with another one of our members, ICMCumim. We met at 7:00 AM and headed for his 440 acre deer lease a short distance from there to do some calling for a few hours. This area had experienced flooding rains the night before and part of the area was still under water. We parked the trucks near the entrance to the property and walked in very quietly. We made several stands at the far ends of the lease and on the ranch next door which he has permission to enter for predator hunting. On the way in we saw bobcat, coyote, and hog tracks. The wind picked up a lot as we went on. To make a long sad story short, I got skunked. I was doing the calling, so it was me that got skunked. The only critter with hair on it that we saw was one jackrabbit. We had crows and hawks buzzing the caller from all directions and the stands seemed good......sun at our back, good shooting lanes, enough cover for them to be comfortable coming in, the wind in our face or cross-wind... Some days you just don't call anything. I really did enjoy getting into the field and being able to spend time with ICMCumin Bob

Some days are diamonds, some days are stones......
I had one of those "stone" days last Thursday......the forecast called for light winds....and they were, when I left the house......an hour and 60 miles later......about daylight....the wind decided to show its uglyness and ruined my morning of calling........I saw two coyotes, one on the walk in to the first stand.....he never saw me, but was too far for a shot and either didn't hear the call or just wasn't interested......I saw the other one as it ran across the highway while I was driving home.....

Hey Bob - there is no need to moan about it - I had a blast......;D To make a long sad story short, I got skunked. I was doing the calling, so it was me that got skunked. No - we both got skunked! Just because you were doing the calling doesn't mean there wasn't culpability on my part too! Some days you just don't call anything. I really did enjoy getting into the field and being able to spend time with ICMCumin Bob - the pleasure was mine. I really enjoyed hunting with you. If anybody has the time to make a varmint hunt with Bob, you will learn something. He has really developed a data base on coyotes and bobcats over the years. My data base is mainly with things with wings and feathers so a few hours spent with Bob is time well spent to help me come up the learning curve. What Bob didn't tell ya'll is somehow all the critters on the lease found out THE BOBCAT was coming in to call them, so they all migrated toward Shiner and Schulenburg the night before - during a hellacious rainstorm! And all the mother coyotes told their babies if they weren't good THE BOBCAT was comin' to get them!!!;D;D;D And BTW - that BBQ at Joel's is worth the drive by its own self, ain't it Bob?! ;D ;D ;D

Yeah I tried Friday nite myself with no luck. The d*** wind just wouldn't co-operate.We called in one but it was a new stand that I had never seen in the daytime(by the way for anyone new it's best to scout it during the day first)and I guess he circled us and came in downwind. We saw each other about the same time and I guess he was faster.Better luck next time though.Remember Bobcat there is always a next time!!!

:)Well Bob... I think the REAL problem was that ICM didn't get you one of those leather couches from his store to sit on while you were calling! I mean a guy has to be comfortable when he's hunting!

Any day outside hunting is better than the best day inside in the recliner watching TV. The slow days just let us appreciate more those days when the chase is hot.

We had a great time on Sunday. Both of us needed to get "out of town"! We walked everywhere the whole morning and put a few miles under our belts. It is hard to beat being in the field on a crisp morning with a huntin' pard. And the BBQ at Joel's was top-notch!! 8-)They had better look out next time...... ;D Bob Sarge-Sounds like you are still up in NE......burrrrrr!

Bobcat, Ya'll weren't the only ones to get skunked this weekend. We called all day Saturday up around Childress with my buddies new Foxpro, and the only 'Yotes we saw were well over 1/4 mile away. We did get them to at least look in our direction. Sunday wasn't much better. First stand was looking into two draws that come together. Called for Twenty minutes, whem my buddY decides to sit up on his knee to look around. I go ahead and stand up, as my butt was numb, and as soon as I do, a "yote breaks across the clearing I was watching 60 yds. from us. Don't know if he was sneaking, or had been there a while, but he busted me big time

Hey Toecatch - at least you saw some. We didn't even see an armadillo or a squirrel this past Sunday...... We saw one lousy jackrabbit at warp speed.....
But that just means there will be that many more the next time we go out there, right ? ? ?
