Coyotes attack deer near township home By DEB WUETHRICH January 29, 2004 Tecumseh, MI When Marvin Grenier heard a bump in the night recently, the noise was loud enough to cause him to investigate. At first, he thought the 4:30 a.m. sound might be attributed to the family cats messing around in the laundry room, but when he looked outdoors, the sight near Grenier's porch surprised him.
"Two coyotes had a young doe on the ground and were trying to drag it toward the creek," said Marvin. "The doe had to weigh around 50 pounds," he said. He later determined that the noise occurred when the animals attacked and killed the deer. When he opened the window for a closer look, the coyotes took off. "They're kind of skittish," he said.
Coyotes are more prevalent in the Upper Peninsula and in the upper lower part of the state, but increased sightings have been reported in southeastern Michigan. Clinton resident Norm Campbell captured one on film last August when he spotted a coyote on his property. As Marvin said, the wild animals are coming in closer to residences as towns spread out into the country. "They're getting so brave," said Irene.
