I don't know why, but the first thing I look at after I down a coyote is the color of the tip of the tail.
In southern AZ they seem to be mostly black tipped and the further I venture north from there, white tips seem to be more common.
Southern coyotes seem to sport more red in the fur as well while venturing north from there, the color seems to get more yellow (or pale) with darker collars.
Anybody agree? or disagree?

Jay; I have never been out in your neck of the woods but in Maine about 1 in 20 or so have a white tip and about 1 in ten are a red fox red color. I have often wondered where they picked up that color variation.

Jay,
In most of the areas I hunt the white tips are rare also. It is kind of like grey and red foxes. In an area with lots of greys, we tend to take them for granted and look at a red as a "lifetime" trophy and vice versa.

;DHey Jay... I would concur with Bobcat. About all we see in this area are "black tip". Of course that's only natural with all of the oil we have around here! ;D
