as some of you know i just completed a 17/30 carbine on a cz 527 action. i was searching for the perfect fox calling gun. in some sence i found it. i downloaded it to 3000 fps with a 25 gr bullet to limit pelt damage. as you will be able to see from the pic it was a 75% sucess. one of the fox was behind a cactus which deflected the bullet . it ended up gut shotwith a deformed bullet too boot. the others would not need any stitching. my next project will be to down load a 20 gr v-max to 3000-3100 and try it again. here was the mornings hunt, two singles and a double. bobcat this is what they look like when you don't miss. mountain man i am getting in the mid 3600's with a 25 gr hornaday hp. i have shot about 9 coyotes with is so far with the desired results. seven were shot with the 25 and two with the 20 gr v mav. the 20 gr bullets traveling at 3950 are a little lite. i shot two with the 20 gr vmaxes at 200 yds, one dropped in his tracks and the other ran about 400 yds before dropping. slower is better on foxes, 3000 fps with a 25 gr hp is about perfect. the bullet goes in and usualy does not come out. the 20 gr vmax at 3950 craters on entrance, leaving a oversized hole to stitch up. i have had excelent luck over the years with 30 gr bergers from my 17 ackley hornet. the bullet thumps them pretty hard and does a minimum of pelt damage. the 30 gr berger works very well for coyotes as well but i have had problems with them blowing up in mid air from the bigger 17's. here is the two shot with the 20's www.hpphoto.com/servlet/LinkPhoto?GUID=246e418b-54df-7a06-2498-31f752c659a8&size=lg[/img] www.hpphoto.com/servlet/LinkPhoto?GUID=a0b5511d-5b9f-54b6-11ba-39c1313b21ff&size=lg[/img] bob

Foxhunter,
Give me the scope on the 17/30 I am looking for a new project and was considering a 17 caliber. How are you making your brass? What is the average life of the brass? Who chambered the barrel? Any scope would be appreciated including some load data.

Here is a picture of my 22-250 with a fox that my fiance shot one night in the back pasture. We heard the coyotes howling one night about 2:00 in the morning so he decided to go out and do some calling. He wanted me to go out but I had to get up early to go barrel racing so I decided to stay in. He had been out maybe 15 minutes when he turned the red light on there he stood about 15 paces out in front of him. He circled around the shooting range and back through the burn pit when he gave him the kiss of death. He stopped and looked and Richard shot him about 19 paces out.

bozowise the 17/30 carbine is just what it says. a 17 carbine necked down to 17 caliber. i use a cut off 250 savage die and a cut off 22 br die to forn the cases then use the seater die to form it down to 18 caliber. the final step is to run it thru the sizer die. if you want a 17 i would suggest the 17 mach 4 as the 221 fb brass is pretty easy to find and you don't need form dies.
