In the past couple of years I have heard lots of predator hunters talk about the "Kiss of Death" bringing in those coyotes or cats that hang up on us. Well this evening I got to use MY "Kiss of Death" and low and behold it worked. It worked REAL GOOD!!
We had two gentlemen and a 12 yr old boy out to our place this evening for some hog hunting. Me and my buddy and his 8 yr old granddaughter waited at the truck until about 5 pm and we slowly made our way up to the barn on the hill. This way we could watch the two blinds the hunters were in and possibly get a look at some animals. My buddies granddaughter had never heard or seen a coyote before and on our way to the barn we had coyotes howling in every direction. It was easy for us to tell several of them were pretty close. Once we made it to the barn I noticed 3 coyotes about 300 yds out. I motion to my buddy his granddaughter to ease up to my position so they could see them. She got a small glimpse of them thru the brush and that was it. I decided to try the "Kiss of Death" just to see if I could do it and if they would come closer so she could get a good look at them. I give it a try and they stop and head back towards the direction in which they came from. I wait a little bit and try again and now they are about 200 yds out and are yipping back and forth. Every so often we would catch a glimpse of them thru the mesquites. I try one more time and we loose sight of them totally for 5 minutes or so. I look up by the cow ( not 50 yds away from us eating hay ) and notice one had its full attention on something. I catch movement about 75 yds out just over the broomweeds - its the three coyotes coming right at us. We stand completely still as they walk in ( a female and her two mangy pups ). The female sees us but doesn't seem bothered by us and they keep coming in and then vere off not 20 yds from us. The ended up walking down the road and finally out of sight. Had we been armed with a 12 gauge loaded with #4's all three would have died right there. I was amazed that "my" kiss of death worked and was completely excited that my buddies granddaughter got to hear and see her first coyote up close like that. I wish I had taken my son out so he could have seen them as well, but he wanted to stay home today and play with all his new toys he got for Christmas.
What got me about these three coyotes was the adult female had a nice thick fur and looked to be in good shape; whereas both of the pups had mange so bad I doubt either of them last another month. I have more hair on my toes than both of those dogs had combined!! ;D
Our hunters didn't see any hogs, but it was still a good day in the field as fas as I am concerned. How often do you get to show a young child their first wild coyote at 20 yds??
