Ok, now that I've been humbled... Actually I had a great time! This place apparently has a bunch of coyotes that I didn't know about! We tried setting up near a pile of dead goats. I'm pretty sure we were actually flirting with success but got busted b/c of the wind. I did take a shot at one about 100yds or so that apparently was just kinda hanging out to see what happened. Then we tried some calling...I think I need to work on that. We also tried the boombox and hunting out of the bed of the truck technique, but I need some sort of visor for my spotlite... Oh well-we learned some things!! Hopefully they'll still be working on the dead goat buffet this weekend....but I doubt it. On Sat. there were 7, last night there were only two left! I think I have it worked out how to tote my smallish car battery so we can use a spotlight when we're not in the truck--a camo two wheeled dolly! How does that sound? I'm probably going to need somebody to go with me this weekend that knows what they're doing.... Anybody live near enough? I'm in Plano and would be hunting in Hillsboro...

Hey pyledriver, It is difficult to combine calling and hunting over a kill. If you are looking for targets of opportunity just check the wind and set up at sundown with your red light and wait. If you have a good moon, you may not need the light. When you have a good shot, take it. After you have shot, you are not going to have much luck calling for a bit. I would try calling once you are set up. I'll bet you call some in. With calling you need to keep moving from stand to stand. If you are just trying control work over a dead pile you just need to sit and wait as they come in.......it is boring but can be productive. Clear as mud? I hope the weather gives you a break on Sunday..... Bob

Hey Bobcat-thanks for the info!
We didn't call when we were set up on the dead pile, and that was where we got a shot (that missed). But later we did in an adjacent pasture. It was cool because we felt like they were gonna come in at any second...kinda pins and needles!
How far do you move when you're calling and want to switch stands? That's one thing I'd really like to know...
Thanks!!

If you are in the wide open spaces you need to move 3/4 to 1 mile. If you are in heavier caller you should move 1/2 mile between stands. This is a general rule of thumb.
