Bobcat asked me to swing in here and give a little report of my recent Texas hunt.
I went down (from Minnesota) to west Texas to do a bit of night hunting with Randy Watson.
Randy and I are in the process of filming and putting together a night hunting video so we left the house armed with rifles, shotguns and video cameras.
The first stand of the evening found us filming a nice bobcat coming in to the call. He was very photogenic and cooperative right up to and including the point where he died.
The second stand had a grey fox approaching. I think he wanted to be a star as well as he came out of the brush, stood doing his best pose and promptly died.
The third stand a camera shy cat came in but really didn't want to be filmed. We filmed him anyway and then shot him.
On the fourth stand the only thing that came up was the wind. The wind grew stronger as the night went on and was finally up around 40mph. That nearly shut things down on us. We still managed to call in and film a few more animals but it made it downright miserable.
The second night was dead calm. There was hardly a whisper of a breeze. Our hopes were as high and the wind was the night before. While we managed to call in a coyote or two, it was painfully slow. The one coyote that gave us the best chances ended up with his hide intact because I wanted him in a more open area for the video. Well, that open area just happened to be downwind. I let him get too far and he scooted out of there on us without a shot being fired. What a rookie mistake!
Let me tell you, that filming a hunt is not as easy as just going out and killing a bunch of animals! Geez, if only they'd take direction!
So, the hunt wasn't a complete wash but it wasn't what we had hoped for either.
The good part is that we still need more footage for our video so I'm heading back in Feb. Yeee Haaawwww!
