Has anybody tried hunting on the public hunting lands here in Texas? I'm talking about the land you can access with the $45 Annual Public Hunting permit... Opinions? Success stories? Recommendations?

I made an inquiry about the very same thing a while back. I didn't get any responses from anyone who had hunted predators on the APH lands. It looks like it might possibly several hundred thousand acres of either non, or lightly hunted country. If I don't land some bigger ranches south of here for predators, thats going to be my next option. Maybe we can hunt together, if you decide you want to try it. Let me know.
By the way, the APH permits are up to a whopping $50 now.

Hey Doorgunner that would be great! I've been talking to the forestry folks at some of the WMA's close to me and found out that night hunting is an option on most-they just like to be notified so they don't think you're poaching out there at night with your spotlight. Dangit, they just keep going up on these prices! We probably ought to buy the lifetime license-at least then we're locked in! The APH still isn't a bad deal though considering what you get. I'm gonna go hog hunting with some friends and it looks like we'll be doing the type II thing to save some $$. I'm in the Dallas area, maybe we can find a good WMA sort of 1/2 way and meet there sometime...

Hey Pyledriver, thanks and I'm game. I did some hog hunting on the Moore Plantation WMA (Unit # 902) about three years ago. We got hammered with rain for three days, but did stalk up on a very large black boar on the second day. We were hunting with shotguns and slugs, and I just couldn't close the distance the last 50 or so yards. This WMA is small (LOL), being only 25,601 acres. There are a couple of pipeline right-of-ways that look like they might be good potential stand sites for predators. I'm pretty backed up at work until probably April, but by then the hog hunters are gone, and about the only thing huntable during that period will be predators, so that might be a good time. I don't night hunt anymore, but I'm always willing to start back up with someone. Take a look at your map booklet, and shoot me some other suggestions. I do believe there is a big National Grassland up closer to the Metroplex, that might be good. Your probably in a better position to find out if there is a good coyote population on it. Email me or send me an instant message, and we can discuss it further. Take care!

Well it isn't as bad as I make it up to be. I just have a bit more flexibility during that time (I hope). I might could get away sooner, with little arm twisting and advanced notice. Let me know..........Brian

Hey pyledriver,
I finished up my squirrel season with a couple and one nice fat rabbit on some of the local WMA land yesterday. But I spent most of the day doing scouting on the smaller section I haven't hunted yet. Some of these smaller sections are hard to find and get to but offer good pay out. With all the rain we just had, finding fresh sign from coyote and bobcat wasn't hard. After this set of workdays, My longchange will be spent calling these sections.

Chickenfoot: I'm not asking you to be too specific, but are you having better luck on the smaller timber company leased land, or the larger national forests? Based on what I saw a couple of years ago, the bigger national forests are pretty under-utilized for predator hunting. Let me know how your luck pans out.

Yeah I too am curious about hunting WMA's.i guess i need to just go get the liscence and map and start trying it out.Does anyone know any of the rules about predator hunting on public land?Someone here has to know what it takes.Maybe ya'll should have a posse hunt on a WMA.Sounds like a cheap way to get together.

Hey Partsman, I'm totally up for that!
I've been calling various WMA's that I'm interested in and asking about night hunting, etc. Some WMA's have weapon restrictions, some don't allow hunting at night. If night hunting is allowed they've almost always recommended notifying the game warden and sheriff's dept. so you don't get hassled-apparently deer get poached off these lands quite a bit.
Generally speaking though-daytime hunts are no problem! I just hope those coyotes don't see orange...

So is that what they say?You have to wear orange.Did they say how much? And it doesn't matter to me I'll hunt night or day.Been looking at one called the Old Sabine Bottom WMA.Its 5727 acres. But under legal game it doesn't mention coyotes as legal game.I've got a few more maps I'm gonna print off.I'll keep you informed.

Hey Parsman, some buddies and I will be at Old Sabine Sun Feb 16 thru the following Wed. morning to hunt porkers. I talked to 'em there and they don't allow spotlights but they're cool with predator hunting during the day with any legal weapon. They do have a restriction though during squirrel season, shotgun only.
We've been wavering the whole time....pig hunt only, or bring the AR's in case we get a wild hair..lol
Maybe we could meet and talk about a future pred. hunt? We're planning on eating dinners in Lindale since we probably won't feel like cooking at the end of the day!

I don't see anything in the book about using dogs, but it would be best to check first. There are lots of rules on these WMA's and apparently just because it doesn't say you CAN'T doesn't mean you CAN.
If I find out more I'll let you know....
