Just got back from a trip to a ranch we hunt from time to time. We arrived last Thurs. (28th/Jan.) and returned on Mon. We had a good time and hunted hard. Patsy and I hunted with my best friend and his brother. This ranch has really heavy cover and few roads through it so it was a little more difficult than most in that area of Texas. My friend killed a heavy gray fox (male) at dawn on Friday morning. Then he was able to shoot another at 4:15 am Saturday morning. I shot a nice female bobcat right before dark Saturday afternoon. Good trip, I just didn't take enough pictures. Didn't even get one of my cat. Here's a pic of that fat little fox and my buddy. The fox is the one laying on the ground.

It sounds like y'all had a pretty good hunt!!
Were you hunting the Carta Valley Ranch or just a ranch in that area?
Good Hunting,
Bob

Hey Bobcat,
Our hunt was on the Kinnickkinnick Ranch right near the Carta Valley Ranch. There is a lot of game on the ranch, however unlike most other ranches in that part of Texas I don't think the Kinnickkinnick was cleared back near the turn of the century. Consequently some portions of the ranch are really thick with more native vegetation. There are a lot of small oak trees, and a pretty style of pine tree that I've not seen elsewhere. I'm no arborist so I don't know the species, but it's pretty. Of course there is also the invading cedar trees.
It's just a lot thicker than you are used to for that part of the country. Not many roads cut, so a lot of the land goes unexplored, unhunted. Some places you'd have to crawl through the small oaks they are so tight. I managed to make those critters show themselves though.

Oh Yea, It has plenty of both. Here's a good example of what I was talking about. The land on the right is the Kinnickkinnick. On the left is the Doran Ranch. Lot's of steep hills too! Big, beautiful, country.

Slammy, You're just up the road from me. I live in Van Alstyne. I have a couple of calling spots out your way but most of my places are in Howe and Westin. Have ya'll had any luck calling around here this year? I'm putting on a calling contest here in Van Alstyne on the 28th. It's looking like there might be a pretty good turn out.

Hey Jbrad,
Sorry I took so long to answer. I saw your post about the contest. We can't make it, though. My daughter is going to have her second baby on the Thursday before that so I'll be busy with that or baby sitting my grandson.
When I hunt around here it's usually just here at the house. Most times I just film the coyotes makin fools of themselves. I shoot the cats though. Most hunting is done in west Texas, Del Rio area or near Crystal Springs in south Texas. Some in southeast Texas near Lufkin.
Don't I remember seeing you in pics with some Grey fox? Did you get them in this area?

Slammy, Sorry ya'll can't make the contest. Maybe ya'll can make it next time.
I hunt a place just down from Carta Valley in Bracketville. Lots of deer, hogs, and exotics, but yery few coyotes. Great place to call coons, and a bobcat every now and then though.
Yes, I took a couple of fox off a place I call in Westin last year. I called up 5 or 6 that winter, I haven't seen one out there this year. I also had a friend of mine kill one just east of VanAlstyne about 1/2 a mile out of town, with a pellet gun. There's more around here than people think.
