Hey Cross J, There are a lot of differing opinions on coyote speak as you stated. I don't know of any female mating invitational howls on the net currently. I would PM Rich Cronk and ask him if you can call him. He is a wiz with howling and has been known to do "tutorials" over the phone. He also makes one of the finest howlers out there. I know Rich would be happy to help. We may have some of our Posse members that have some sounds on their computers that they could e-mail you to practice with. I really think that as long as you are doing good howls and not warning barks, they are going to head your way. I will let the howling masters take it from here. Good Hunting, Bob

Cross J , There is a lot of confusion out there regarding coyote language. There are those who claim to be experts in coyote language that have scared a lot of new callers out of even trying to howl. I am not convinced that there is any human being anywhere, that actually knows coyote language as well as they may lead you to believe. The more time that I spend talking to coyotes with a howler, and the more folks that I speak with that are also having success with howlers, the less I believe in this coyote language thing. The coyotes probably do have a better understanding of what this howl or that yip actually means, than any human ever will. There are a couple of things that I think that I know about coyote talk. A coyote that barks and howls with a very angry tone in his voice is probably pissed about something or someone. That sound is what I like to call a challenge howl or challenge bark. A coyote howl that sounds sad or lonely is probably a lonesome howl. A coyote that hangs up out of sight when I am calling, and he barks with a sound in his voice that seems frustrated is probably a coyote that wants to come in to my calls but he feels that there is something not quite right over there. I like to start off a calling stand with a lonesome howl, usually two or three of them. With mating season going on now, a few high pitched challenge howls should work well also. I don't use much barking while calling anymore. Howls, whines and pup squeals are about it for me. I also don't howl for purpose of locating, except in spring and summer when I want to locate den areas. Coyotes will approach the sound of a stranger in their area, and often do so silently. Midwestern and eastern coyotes are real shutmouthed in daytime, but they will still come to sound of strange coyote in their territory.

Cross J,
In my opinion, there are only 4 coyote vocalizations that any HUNTER should know backwards and forwards.
1. < lone howl > This is a greeting or is anyone out there type Howl.
2. < female invatation > this is like the lone howl but tapers off instead of staying kinda flat, also should be made with a diferent higher pitched howler
3. < pup distress > also called the KI YI or dog hit by the truck sound.
last but not least 4. < Threat bark > this sound, untill you learn how to incorperate it into your agressive calling is a good way to know when you have been busted, winded or seen.
I realy feel that trying to learn more than that is a wast of time for the coyote hunter who shoots them not so for the camera hunter, knowing more coyote talk may keep them there longer for more videoing
