I just discovered an old beautiful black powder horn that my father in law gave me, along with his black powder rifle and bullet molds and various supplies. I use everything but the powderhorn and was thinking it would make an excellent howler. Any suggestions on which open reed mouthpiece to install in it?

I am sure Rich will chime in with some help when he sees this. Make sure you post a pic for us when you get it done!!

SingleCoil, The Crit'r call "standard" would make a decent sounding voice for your howler project. I would make a custom reed for the Crit'r call voice and cut it a bit wider than the original. A small Austin howler, the one he calls the "female" howler would make a really slick looking voice that would do the trick. A Lohman model #280 stuck in there for a voice would make that bugger scream. Post a picture of that howler when you get it finished would ya please?

Thank you gentlemen for your response's, that's what makes this page so awesome. A beginer like me (even though I'm no spring chicken) can learn a ton of info from you guys, saving years of trial and error. I wish I could pay all of you back somehow. You guys willingly share a wealth of information that some of the locals around here seem reluctant to share. Thanks again fellas, I do appreciate it.

call me cheap. it is not that i do not want to shell out the bucks for a really good howler, it is just that i like to experiment. my hunting compadre say just by a cronk and be done with it. and i probably will. i did take a critr call standard and insert it in a funnel use to put oil in automobiles. i cut the back end off to accomodate the call and then cut the front end down to about a 3 inch diameter. the call sounds ok. i guess. it seems to me to have a "plastic" sound if you know what i mean. it just does not have the correct resonance or something. where can a person purchase some cow horns?
HAVE A GOOD ONE

ok, Ebay usually has some cow horns on their auction. I have see cow horns being sold at black powder rifle shoots and trapper conventions too. If you can hook up with someone who works at a slaughter house, you may find a very large supply of horns.

This kind of information is what seperates this board from most of the others. I have yet to see the ego/arrogance that is associated with some other boards as well, which is a huge turnoff for me - no matter how good the information is.
