Rick,
You are making a similar design as Mr. Cronk, not copying him... kinda like Chevy making pick-up trucks, even though Ford made the first one.
Chevy doesn't make copies of Fords.
You are doing just fine... keep on keepin' on!
I interpreted what GH said to basically mean, " don't make an exact weems copy (or any other existing call)... without saying it's a "replica".
That would be like stealing, giving credit for the design, by calling it a replica, is more like quoting another maker.
But I can see where his words could be taken as "kinda strong" if you read that into em... I didn't see it that way.
And being as how Mr. Cronk was nice enough to have posted the directions on how to make a call like his, I don't think he'd mind yours are similar.
And I think style is something that takes a long time to develope... it took me around a year the settle into a style that is my own, and along the way I tried many design elements used by others.
Frank Lloyd Wright once said, "I do not really design anything... I merely take the forms that nature has provided us, and combine them in a way that is pleasing to the soul."
Turning wood in a lathe is much like writing music, there are only so many design elements available, just like there are only so many notes... it's easy to have some calls have similar looks.
I can surely see similarities in GH's calls and Ryan Weiser's (of RAW Calls) wooden calls, but I'd never say one copied, or stole from, the other without them admitting so to me first.
I'll admit to flat out, to copying many things from many makers along the way... Slydog's serated end I tried once, I flat out copied the CritR Call standard's toneboard for a long time (holding them side by side for comparison, and shaping my calls identical to Major's design), and I owe everything to learning P.S. Olt's doubled reed design (that was the first place I ever saw it, I bet he didn't invent the idea either).
I think Bearman Rick has already shown a great sense of style in his closed reed antler calls, which are unique, with a simple elegance, and sound as good as any other closed reed custom call I own.
I have one of his first ones, and I'll always value it among my most prized called, it was made
by my friend.
Krusty
P.S. Nimrod, .012 will work just fine. See
this thread in it I wrote pretty much everything I could about tuning an open reed call, it should help you get that howler howlin'... if you need any other help just ask me either in a post or by private message.
Rick, LAYED OFF? no way... man I am sorry to here that, temporary seasonal thing or what?
I am not working this week either, we gotta get together, OK.
P.P.S. Gee thanks Nimrod... my wife looked over my shoulder while I was typing to you, and she told me to "lighten up, and quit calling guys names"... she thought I was just being mean
