I use both the moly and non moly versions......I generally use the 40 and 50 grain in my 223 and the 50 grain in my 22-250.......they have been very accurate in my rifles.
I'm not convinced that the 40 grain is the best weight, for coyotes, in the 223.....I'll probably go to 50s when I get through all the 40s I have loaded.

I started using the 50gr. V-Max in my .222 Rem. last fall and I'm very happy with them. They shoot as well as match bullets in my rifle, and the preformance is very impressive. The only thing I've had a chance to try them on was a crow this last fall. He looked like he'd been garguling hand granades. Good Shooting, MaBell

I shoot the 50gr v max's in my 223 and love em. They will fillet a PDog! Haven't had any other critters take a step after impact either... Slew

I use the 55 grain in my 22-250 and they work very well. Once I use the 55's up, I am going to try the 50's and see how they do. I have used both the moly and non coated as well. It seems to me that I have to do a lot of extra cleaning to get the moly out. 'They' say that you don't have to clean as often when you use the moly, but I would rather clean more often than clean for three times as long when I do clean. Just my opinion.

CDNGUNNER...........
i used the 49 vax in 223 last year. they were very accurate. however them seem to open up much too fast for my liking. we had several run off with nasty entrane wounds. i feel the 50 and 55 are better. but that is one fools opinion. i have been shooting the vmax in my 22-250 and have problems with them runnning as much as 150 after the hit. i am gonna start loading the 50 hornady sx or the sierra blitz. i want to get away from the polycarb. tips. i used these two 25 years ago and they were DYNOMITE. we did have to load them down in the 22-250's as they was made for 222 and 223 velocities...... coyote, out

I use both the moly and non-moly versions in 33,40,50&55 grain. I shoot the 40 grn moly bullets out of my 22-250 and have no complaints with either the accuracy or the terminal effects. Surprisingly, very little pelt damage on coyotes with shot placement to the chest cavity. Smaller game is a different story. The 50 or 55 grn gets the nod for the 223. At lower muzzle vel, I like the heavier bullets.

I shoot the 60 grn V-Max loaded by Black Hills. They do very well in my AR's, and are very effective on coyotes.

I use the 40gr VMax in my K-Hornet... I realize you were asking about a 223, but I thought I'd put in my two cents worth... I load it to about 3100fps using LilGun... it's pretty accurate out of my contender carbine... I usually manage about .8" to 1.0" groups with it, when I do all the right things... a benchrest shooter I am not.... I have shot armadillos, jackrabbits, crows and one coyote with this load. It absolutely slaps jackrabbits down to the ground, leaving big holes.. One crow dropped at the shot at about 100yds.. I walked over and flipped the bird over, and from the ribcage down was gone... not just shredded... gone. The coyote was about 50yds away, and I either twitched, or he turned as I shot, but the bullet hit too far forward in the chest... blew the front of his chest off... he ran about 50yds before expiring.... these are pretty explosive bullets, and very accurate... I'm very pleased with their performance....

If you don't mind watching coyotes recover and run off after a frontal chest hit or shoulder splash, by all means, go for the V-Max. If you have to use a Hornaday V, then I would suggest nothing less than a 60 grain.
Sometimes the old V-max anchors a dog and sometimes they don't.
Sierra 55 gr sp or bt are much better choices that produce consistantly.
