I started playing around with this caliber on the Sierra Balistics program and was so impressed with what I saw... I ran out and got me one! It's a Rem 700 Mountain LSS... Sweeeet rifle. Topped it with a Leupol VX-II 6-18.. Takin it to the range for the first time tomorrow.

I bought the exact rifle last summer ('02). Nice shooting rig. I have re-stocked it with a lightweight fiberglass stock. Mine shot best with 120 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips. Here is what it looks like now: and here it is next to my 7saum (i put my laminate on it) I have a 5-15x40mm Bushnell Elite 3200 on it now, but I admit it is way too big of scope for this rifle. You may find the same with your 6-18x. A 2-7x would be ideal for this size of rifle. If you handload, try slower burning powders, like 4350's, rl19, rl22, 4831's, wxr, and h1000. That is what I find works with 120 gr. or heavier bullets. For 100 gr. or lighter, try Varget or RL15. If I was to stick to only one load for deer, it would be the 129 gr. Hornady Interlock with RL19. I shot 2 deer last year with 140 gr. Nosler Partitions. What a great killer this 260 is!

Thanks Todd... I just received today some of the Hornady 129gr SST bullets to try. I have heard a lot of good things about this bullet. As far as the scope goes, my favorite scope is the Vari-X III 4.5-14, but the VX-II 6-18 is all I had laying around. On my lease there is an 8pt or better rule. I want to make sure that I can see all them points before I pull the trigger. FWIW, I don't believe that a points minimum is an effective way to manage deer, but I don't get to make the rules.

......almost as good as a 7mm-08! ;D
The 260 Rem is a nice caliber.......another necked down 308. It is very close to the 7mm-08 in performance. They make very good short action carry rifles, especially here in Texas. It will handle anything you want to hunt here.
I agree with todbartell, I would go with less scope when you can.....
Good Hunting,
Bob

I have tried the 129 gr. SST with average to poor results. Alot of 6.5mm shooters I have heard from say the same. On the other hand, the 120 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip is almost always a superb shooter, and would give similar terminal results as the SST (maybe a bit more expansion).

Todd, I finally got a chance to work up several loads using th 129 SST and I didn't have very good results either. They are Minute of Deer, but not MOA. I did have great results with the 120gr Balistic Tip, but I am affraid they are to frangible for something like hogs. I am trying to work up a load for the TPP Hog hunt in Feb. I am going to try the 140gr GameKings next.
Bobcat, I have read and heard a lot of good things about the 7-08. That will probably be my next project... that or a 7X57... can't decide which.

I have only had my 260 a summer but so far I am impressed. Mine is a 700 action and a 40x take off barrel and trigger. It is fast twist with 1 turn in 8 and 24.5 of barrel and a muzzle brake for a total of 28 inches. My best load so far is IMR4064 and 120gr Nosler BT 1/2 to 3/4 inch five shot groups. I have shot no game so far but I am looking forward to finding a coyote in the crosshairs.

Good looking rifles, Tod........ Bob - what size scope did you have in mind as being ideal for this weapon and hunting here in Texas.....

ICMCumin,
IMHO, so take this for what you paid for it, I would go with a fixed 6x from Nikon, Burris, or Leupold or a variable 3-9x40. Unless you are in an area where you will be taking some veeeeeery long shots, the old 6x is just about perfect. Add a range finding reticle and it gets even better......

I have a 6.5x55swede that I have have been working on for years(finally got it in a good stock)velocity wise is very close to the 260,have had the best results with 120gr rem psp,129hornady and 125gr noslers(partitions)this rifle has always amazed me as to how accurate it is(for a sporterized military rifle)however it has a very fast twist 1n8 I think, the 120 is a good doall bullet I shot medium sized 8pt with the 129,deer was quartering tward me bullet entered between the neck and shoulder and was recovered in the rear hindquarter as for a scope I have been useing a sightrons2 3x9x42,have found them to be as good(to my eyes)as leupolds for half the price(from midways)
