With all the stories I read about Remington rifles that won't shoot......well, I just can't seem to find one that won't! ;D
Several months ago, I saw a post about a used Model 7 for sale in Montana......I called the store and found out it was a youth model in 7-08 with Leupold rings and base and the price was very reasonable....so I bought it. When it arrived, to my surprise, it was in a walnut stock.....a youth stock with no checkering....but definitely walnut....not the "hardwood" stock I see on most of the youth models. I test fired it to make sure it would go bang, then stuck it in the safe.....I had an old Simmons 2X7 scope I wasn't using, one of the early "good" Simmons scopes, and I stuck it on the rifle but hadn't sighted it in until today. It would still be in the safe without being sighted in....but my youngest son drew a "Special Youth Hunt" for next weekend and, after talking about which rifle he wanted to use, he decided on this one.
I had worked up some loads for another Model 7 in 7-08 for my antelope hunt in September, they shot sub 1" groups in that rifle, so I thought I'd see what they would do in this little rifle......I loaded up a few cheap Speer 130 grain bullets just to get it on paper, then went to the antelope load......it shot the nicest little .75" 3 shot group you would ever want to see! Just lucky I guess...... ;D
Oh, then there is the SS Model 7 in 7-08 I bought awhile back......a guy on another board was complaining about how he couldn't get it to shoot better than about 2".......it came with a Jewel trigger and an in an HS Precision stock along with the factory parts......I put the factory trigger back on and adjusted it.....put it back in the factory stock, stuck an old Simmons 44 mag scope on it and went out and shot a .650" 3 shot group with the same load that I used in the Youth model today. Just lucky I guess........ ;D
I guess you guys with poor shooting Remingtons need to send them to me? ;D
Seriously, I know there have been some quality problems with Remington....and I refuse to buy anything with their stupid lock......but I often wonder how many "poor shooting rifles" are really decent shooting rifles operated by poor shooters???
