The Texas State Rifle Association is entering into a new phase of
operations since the passage of Senate Bill 501 and other legislation in
the last session. We are seeking to ensure that the various
municipalities, counties and other government entities comply with state
law.
We are undertaking a survey of governmental locations, and a review of
municipal ordinances around the state, to seek out those who are
violating SB501, legislative intent, or the Texas Firearms Preemption Law.
If you have a minute or two to take out of your busy days to help us
out, I would greatly appreciate it. What we need are members to drive
by, or stop by their city halls, libraries, and other municipal
properties and ensure that all 30.06 signs have been removed from these
facilities. If there are any security arrangements at these buildings,
we would like to know whether or not they have practices or policies
that are discriminatory against CHL holders.
The TSRA has already noted several cities providing some level of resistance
to state law. This resistance will jeopardize the legal rights of CHL
holders. Further, a survey taken of municipal ordinances in the state
indicates that approximately 40% of Texas cities have municipal ordinances
that violate the Firearms Preemption Law.
We are asking for your help to determine the true depth of the problem. The
TSRA is committed to ensuring that state law is followed. We are weighing a
wide variety of options to employ against intransigent local governments, up
to and including legal action.
If you discover anything that appears inappropriate, give us a call. We
have already entered into discussions with three municipalities, and two
were swiftly brought to a favorable conclusion.
Thanks for your continued support of the Texas State Rifle Association.
Sincerely,
James Dark
