Can you put too good of a scope on a rifle?? Got my 30-30 leveraction a few days back and Im looking for a scope. I had planed on a nikon prostaff, but a leupold is like 50 bucks more. Both scopes are 3x9-40. So which one do I choose?? ---- dont remember the model of the loopy.

RamHunter, I would stay with a straight 4x scope. The 30/30 is a 150yd gun at most and a 3x9 scope I feel is more than needed. I have a 2 3/4 x Redfield my Dad put on mine 40yrs ago and is all I need. Just stay with a quality scope Nikon, Leopold, Burris and Weaver all make fine scopes.

When I read your title my first thought was yes. I believe you can put a much too powerful scope on a rifle. But the idea of putting to high a quality scope on a rifle I would disagree with. A lousy scope on a 150 yard rifle is as bad as a lousy scope on a 1000 yard rifle. Between the two it is pretty much a toss-up. I have several of each and like them both. For 50 dollars I don't think you are losing anything with the Nikon, but a Leopold is a Leopold and has never let me down.
Finally, I would agree with Deans. I like a low powered scope as well. A 2.75X Scopechief topping a Sav99 was my favorite combo for pushing deer out of the sloughs and shelter belts around here.

What? Too much Scope? Never.
Well, almost never. too much magnificaion on a limited range rifle is a waste of money, no matter how expensive or cheap the scope it. I have a pair of 30-30's and both have scopes. One has a 4x Burris and the other has a 2-7 Redfield/Widefield. Quality scopes to be sure, compact, and they just look right on these short rifles. They also cost less than the same mfg with higher magnifications.
I also have a matching 2-7 on my 30-06 and it is more than adequate for anything I might need it for.
I don't think you can go wrong with a 2-7 power scope on anything that has a practical range under 200 yards.
Odd thing is, I haven't used either 30-30 in years. The boys do on occasion, but I have gone strictly varmint over the past 12 or so years.

i guess i am just different i love lots of magnification. i have a leupold 3.5 - 10 on my .30-.30 i have a burris black diamond 4 -16 on my .280 rem. and a redfield 5-20 on my .300 win. mag. i love to be able to pick a fine point of aim when i get ready to squeeze off a shot instead of just aim at the front half of an animal. just my .02 cents worth. I have to plead guity to this one. I mounted a Roo-shian 6 x 18 x65 on a 300 Weatherby Mag a couple of years ago. (why did I DO that?!!! ) It was a good rifle and an accurate but ugly scope. That was way too much magnification for here in Texas. (Ended up selling them both and buying a couple of Remmy 788's with the proceeds - and glad that I did.)

Over price, Over quality NEVER over magnification yes. It all depends on the use. Try shooting long range p-dogs with a 3-9 or try shooting an offhand match with an 18x scope. Need the right scope for the right hunting just like having the right rifle.

Ok guys seeing I will never shoot past 150yds with my gun, I just found a 2-7x33 leupold in wal-mart. That should be a perfect match. will keep you guys posted , thanks for your suggestions. Ill will put a 4-12x40 leupold on my .243 I plan on buying this summer.

Great choice Ram it is easier to get ontarget with the lower power scope. Great for a brush gun like yours.
