I have only shot a porcupine and a musk rat with mine. One of the members on here has some pictures of hogs taken with the 17HMR. I believe they were from 35 to 204 pounds in size. Don't remember at which ranges they were taken though. I will be using mine for fox when I get the chance to get out after them.

I just got a Taurus 172 .17HMR pump from glicks and I downed two very healthy javalina at about 90yrds with open sights, so I think it will do the trick on a coyote. I bought the gun for coyote since I had been seen atleast one every day on my Uncle's ranch, but I haven't seen one since I've gotten this rifle. I guess I'm going to have to try my first hand at calling.

Hey guys - am reviving this thread. I have found a Ruger mdl 77 in .17 HMR with a Nikon Monarch variable scope for $500. Is it worth it?
I have always felt that the .17 is a bit light for yotes....... What do ya'll think? (I think I'm addicted to buying guns that I don't shoot too much!)
what would you hunt with it?

Odie has one he uses for squirrels, pdogs, crows and such, but the wind sure plays havoc on the little 17 grain pill. But as with any round if a critter is hit in the right place it will go down.

The 17 HMR does not produce enough energy to reliably put coyote size animals down...PERIOD!.........will it kill them?..... certainly, and so will a 22 long rifle......but it is NOT enough gun for the job!!! Heck, a 22 short will easily kill a coyote if you put it in his ear.....but the problem with the 17 hmr, 22 long rifle and the 22 mag is that they don't have enough energy to do the job UNLESS you make a perfect shot every time. Now, I don't know about you, but, in my experience, the perfect shot isn't always presented every time a coyote comes to the call and I hate to educate a coyote because I don't have a perfect shot......that is why I won't use anything smaller than a 22 centerfire!
When I use to trap, I dispatched animals with a subsonic 22 short......I can tell you from first hand experience that a subsonic 22 short will fail to penetrate a grey fox skull at 10 feet if the angle isn't perfect! I have shot fox between the eyes and recovered the bullet under the hide at the back of the skull......because of the angle, the bullet never penetrated the skull, it just skidded along the surface of the skull and stayed under the hide! My point?? Things don't alway work out as planned when you are shooting at living animals! That "perfect" head or chest shot may disappear just as you squeeze the trigger and your "dead right there" predator runs off never to be recovered!!
If you don't mind shooting coyotes and having them run off to die a slow, painful death...... go ahead and use a rimfire.......
Do yourself and the predators a favor.......use the right tool for the job!

I still say if you can shoot and can call you could use a 17hmr on a coyote, but then I've never tried it. Like he said there are a lot better options though! It is a really fun round on crows and squirrels. I took this fox with my Krusty Krier and Marlin 17vs at 50-55yds not too long ago. Matt

Ahhhhh come on GonHuntin.....tell us how you REALLY feel Joe....if I said how I really feel about using the 17 hmr on coyotes....well, I'd probably make somebody mad at me! ;D If it was all I had.....and I couldn't get anything more fitting for the job......I guess I'd use it......but only if I could get the coyotes in close enough to club them with it! Most newbies have NO idea how tough coyotes can be! They probably have never seen one take both barrels of 12 gauge 3" mag number 2s in the face at 20 yards.....flip completely over backwards....get up and run off, never to be found....ask onemoredeer.....he pulled the trigger! They probably have never seen one take a 40 grain hollowpoint from 22-250 through center chest at 40 yards......run another 25 and take a second hit before going down......with part of it's heart laying on the ground where it was hit the first time......ask Bobcat about that one....he pulled the trigger! They have probably never seen one take four solid hits from a 223.....the last 2 at less than 10 yards....before it finally died......I pulled the trigger on that one! The one I killed last week is another good example......I shot it running at 200 yards.....hit in in the back end......when I walked up to it, it got up and started running off......I shot it again.....this time, broadside through the ribs (223, 40 grain V-Max)......after another 3 or 4 minutes, it still had enough life left to bite me on the boot when my foot got too close! He was dead and didn't know it! Are they all that tough......NO.....most of them " Die Right There" with one well placed shot......but I've seen it go the other way enough times to know that it doesn't always work the way it's suppose to! I know it's difficult for some people to admit that they bought the wrong tool for the job, but, that doesn't change the fact that the 17 HMR is NOT enough gun for coyotes.......crows, rabbits, squirrels, diggers, prairie dogs, rats, definitely.......cats, maybe......foxes, probably...... coyotes, never!

who was it that said"use enough gun".......... was it gonhuntin or a fella name ruark or both..... just funnin some. i absoutely agree with gonhuntin. even with coyotes ya need enough gun and the little hmr aint it . maybe for draggonflies and such. oh sure u can kill a yote with small stuff if u just hit em right. some fella named bell shot elephants with 7 mm's ......but he had to hit em right

This topic always seems to stir people up. The 17 HMR has a job, yote shootin ain't it, IMHO. But you open up a lot of controversy when talking about this and sometimes hard feelins towards others. Some people think that taking running shots on critters at long range doesn't demonstrate good ethics, I think it is alright, based on your personal ability, but see what I mean. It jsut goes on and on. I like the little round and have thought about getting one, but probably would opt for another 22 mag instead, matter of preference.
