GonHuntin- It is an amazing story, but true! She hit nothing that would kill him. There is a God!!
I have only had to take 2 follow up shots in 15yrs. I live in the mountains, 200yrd shots are far and few between, most shots are 100yrds or less.
I like small calibers, just what I like. If a person can't shoot a 22lr accurately, then they can't shoot a 30-06 accurately. I would rather be shot with the 22lr than the 06. I have a better chance of survival.
The perfect shot is the one that kills it with one shot, be it the chest or head. "In the real world" I have pass on many shots because it wasn't a kill shot. You can be sure of one thing when I go after it, it is dead!
Hides don't bring any money where I live and if a farmer calls with a problem animal(s) killing it is all they care about. Second shots are not gotten I have been doing this long enough that I am fast, efficent and quiet at solving their problem. I lost count of the number of vermin and preditors 25yrs ago. Sorry I confused you with my post and I hope I answered your reply.
Slammy, I applaude you. You are honest about what you do and how you do it. There is nothing wrong with that. THANKS!!

OK Qaz......I got to know ;D......is the guy's wife still breathing? ;D
;DSomebody shoots me with anything and they better hope I never get back up! ;D I think I'd hold a grudge over that! ;D
I think we have lots of common ground.....it is sometimes very difficult to communicate exactly what we mean by typing on this box! I think everyone here wants a perfectly placed shot the first time, every time.....it just doesn't always happen that way in my world...
You mentioned you like small bores for your predator work......what small bores do you use?

Gonhuntin- She is as far as I know, funny thing is no charges were pressed. Doesn't that make you wonder what the whole story was?
I have used 17hmr, 22lr, 223, 444, 12ga. I have an old 22lr that just shoots great, and is a natural extension of my arm. It is the prefered weapon for me. I use Winchester Wildcats, Powerpoints and PMC Moderators. Between the three they will kill anything I need to. I will be getting a 243 soon to play with.
Some day I hope to get to Texas or somewhere out west to shoot PD or ground squirrels. It sounds like a lot of fun. I shoot groundhogs for fun, there just aren't as many in a field as PDs, so not as much fun!

I can already feel the heat coming for this one... I have used the 17hmr and am not fond of it personally, because of the following reasons. It has a harder time bucking the wind then a 22mag, which is a big concern here in NM. Ammo is the same price between the two rifles. The 22mag packs a better punch. I just feel that the 22mag at about the same price for ammo and rifle is better suited for my needs. No way am I knocking the hmr, but it isn't for me. I also do not feel comfortable suggesting it's use or any other rimfires use as a coyote gun. Opportunity calls sometimes and you make things work with what is onhand, but I would be against a shooting partner of mine taking a rimfire to a calling stand. I am one of the biggest advocates of one shot one kill. You can ask the members that met me on the hog hunt. I shot an encore single shot at more game then any other rifle of mine, so the accuracy of a rimfire is of no concern when I say this. I just feel that you should be responsible enough to take any game you shoot at as quickly and safely as possible. It is understandable that all game does not die instantly, bowhunting in particular, but why be under-guned right from the start. By undergunned you also have to take into effect your surroundings a smaller caliber does not do well through brush and at longer ranges. I prefer the mist effect after the varmit has been hit, confirmation of a hit always brings a smile to my face. So to rap it all up in an easy package, 17 hmr isn't a choice of mine, I suggest center fires on yotes with my buds, and keep em in the 10 ring. and :'(ouch I just feel off my soapbox

Here's one for you...
One of the places that I hunt has a rule that you can not posses a centerfire rifle or a shotgun with larger than #4 shot after deer season. I know it is a stupid rule but I have to live with it. I used my .17 hmr Marlin to shoot a coyote at about 30 yards and I have never seen anything so dead. I'm Talking about instant death!!!! I shot the coyote in the neck.
But... I know my own limits. I would NEVER tell someone else that it is a good load for coyotes. There are just sometimes that you have to do what you can with what you got!
