Let's say you had a virgin Montana Rifleman stainless short action with a magnum bolt face and you wanted to build a rifle........with the following critera: 1. Barrel length no more than 22" 2. something with decent barrel life (no 22 WSM ) 3. brass available or easily made from common brass 4. decent bullet selection 5. dies that won't break the bank on cost 6. must fit 3.125" magazine I'll fill in my thoughts later.....don't worry about my intended use, I might change my mind after hearing what you have to say.....so, tell me what you would build and why......

I think a nice case could be made for the new .25WSSM. Velocities will match the 25-06 out of the short action. A light varmint contour barrel and a compact Burris 4x12 scope to top it all off. Sounds like a coyote getter of the first order. Short, handy and with serious accuracy potential.

or one that Ive been thinking of,the 6.5 on the 300WSM should be just over 6.5-06AI imagine the 129gr sst at 3000/3100 or the groove 108gr at 34/3500 I wouldnt have a clue about bbl life tho but should be able to reachout and touch something

The first thing that popped in my brain was the .264 Win Mag but the COL is a bit long for you mag. but when I was looking through my loading manual I ran across the 6.5 Remington Mag, COL is 2.80 so you could seat the bullets long and gain a little FPS and 1st cav sgt ret got me to look at the 6.5mm's and these things are versatile. I don't know about brass for this round but it's the only thing I could find that would fit your mag.

If you go with the 6.5 Rem Mag keep the barrel at your max 22" I have played with a Rem 600 18" barrel in this caliber and it just doesn't do the round justice with the shorter barrel.

416/350 Remington mag. Have already done one of these projects. Had Beartooth Bullets make a 335 grain cast bullet for this cartridge. 20.5" Pac-Nor SS barrel. It will launch a 325 grain Barnex X bullet just a tad over 2300 FPS with a good dose of H335 or H322.

as far as dies you can get hornady custom dies for $100bucks(at thats what they were last year when I built my 35gibbs) very interesting idea allen but what if you were to use the 300WSM shortened(approately)and necked(sorry I have just never liked the belt)you could load to the same vel with less pressure or it could possible add 100+fps?

I'ld go with something with a 30 cal since more tech has been done with this bullet then any other.
Or you could go with something like a 6.5 wsm, but to be different go with a 6.5,7mm or 30/376 Styer.

Well.....I think I've received about all the input I'm likely to get so I'll tell you what I have in mind for the action....
A good friend of mine moved to Alaska last spring and has been after me to come up and hunt with him....I have always wanted to hunt Alaska, so he didn't have to twist my arm to get me to agree.... ;D and this trip provides a great excuse to build a new rifle that I have always wanted.......
Those little cannons they called the Remington 600 in 350 magnum have always appealed to me for some reason.....something about that big hole in the end of the barrel and the short, handy overall length just makes me want one.......only one problem.....I want one in stainless! Since Remington isn't likely to re-tool and build one for me.....the next best thing is a Remington Custom Shop stainless model 7 in 350......but they are proud of those little jewels and the quality is a crap shoot.......so.....I decided to have one built.......I even bought a donor SS model 7 last year.....but it shoots too good to take apart so that project was shelved and I bought a Steyr Pro-Hunter in 376 Steyr......got the big hole in the end and the short overall length with the 20" barrel......but it's not stainless........fast forward to last week when this new NRC stainless short action with magnum bolt face comes up for sale......and at a deal too good to pass up.....well.....I'm sure you can see what I was thinking!
The plan is for a 20"-22" stainless barrel from PacNor or MRC......a synthetic stock of some kind and a nice medium range variable scope.....I had thought that I would have it chambered in 350 magnum......but the reports I'm seeing on the 338 WSM may change my mind! The 350 should do right at 2700 with a 225 grain partition.....the 338 WSM....well, I have first hand info that it will push a 225 grain bullet at 2800+....a 200 grain bullet at 2900....both out of a 21" tube! Should be the perfect black bear/moose thumper regardless of which chambering I finally decide on!

Hey GH,
That sounds like a real smoker! Do you have the MRC action yet? I am very curious to get your reaction to them. That is the platform I am thinking of building my African rifle on.
Please keep us posted. Are you still planning on using the boat up there?

Bob
No, I don't have the action yet......I hope to get it sometime next week. I'll let you know what it looks like when I get my hands on it.....by all reports, I'm sure I'll be happy with it.
I will probably want a long action eventually.....I still want another 375 H&H and I want one in stainless, so, unless I trip over a stainless 700 or model 70, I will look hard at the MRC!
The Alaska hunt will be based out of his boat so we can cover more ground......the rivers are like highways up there.......he is checking on the ins and outs of bear baiting in his area.....we may try that along with crusing the river and glassing. As you know, I have wanted to take a bear for a long time!
