Any of you folks use an AR15 as a calling rifle?
If so, give us some details on your rig! Photos would be nice too!

In the process of building one now, hopefully will be done soon. DPMS 223 with a 20 inch heavy free floating stainless barrel. Will double as a drive by gun for pdogs as well, need those fast shots in case of a mass charge.

I used a heavy stainless barreled 16-inch upper last year for a calling rifle. I ended up selling the upper, because it was way too heavy to pack around between stands. I'm back to lightweight (sporter weight) barreled rifles now, and am loving it. I don't need a 350-yard prarie dog gun to call coyotes.

I have been working at finding one I like well enough to make it my go to gun for calling. I had a 20in stainless bull barreled upper that shot great groups but was a bit to heavy. I then found an Armalite 20in Target upper that is lighter but it is picky about ammo and it has an annoying muzzle break. I know the right set up for me is out there I just have not found it yet. My eye is now fixed on a 16in free float target upper with 1 in 12 insted of the 1 in 7,8,9 that they all seem to force on us. My lower is a DPMS forged with a JP trigger and speed hammer, I use an ergo grip to correct the length from your hand to the trigger, and a titainium firing pin to stop any slam fires.

GonHuntin, My bushmaster 16 inch fluted barrel, flat top reciever is one of my three faveriot calling rifles. It's got a 3x9x50 sightron. The barrel is a 1/9 twist. I just got tired of reloading so it's shooting blackhills 52 gr. softpoint. As a option I have a red lensed light and mount from Hollandguns for night hunting. The trigger has not been replaced but it has been lightened. I'll see if I can find my digt. camera and post a picture. buzzsaw

Here is my new calling rifle. Its put together by Georgia Precision. --Douglas premium air gauged barrel. --Free float tube. --Spiral fluting - looks cool and cuts down on weight. --Rock River EOP upper. -- National Match trigger. --Hydro graphics camo job. --Leupold VX-II 3x9. Shoots almost everything under an inch, and loads it likes under 1/2 inch. Close up of the spiral flutes. Tommy is very reasonable on his rifles considering what you get. You can go to his web site and check these rifles out. www.georgiaprecision.com. Good Hunting Byron

I like that Byron South special. I wonder how much they charge for the camo job on a customer supplied rifle?

Byron,
That's a very nice fluted barrel. Nice looking rifle overall. I have the free float hand guards on all of mine.I think I have two heavy barrels, one 16" Wilson Match, one 26" Match Grade. Like the previous posts I read I quickly found out that lighter is better for real world hunting situations, if you're really doing it like a job. (It aint my job, but thats what we say about something we love to do.)
I'll try to post a few pictures of my AR's. I love those rifles and the performance is unbeatable, regardless of brand. It's just an excellent system overall.
Also sometimes I might need more than one shot. Sometimes more than two shots. OK, I use a fifteen shot clip, but I've never had to use that many shots.
At least not when there were any witnesses around to repeat the story.

Has anyone used a brass catcher?
I do not use any of my AR's on p-dogs anymore because the brass goes flying throughout the vehicle, chipping the windshield and landing in the worst places ;-( Not many of my customers like the hot brass in their laps as I shoot out the window.

BW, I too have been thinking of using a brass catcher. I have a nice PDog setup with a Bushmaster lower and a DPMS 24" fluted barrel upper. I haven't used it except at the range cuz I don't want to spend more time chasing brass than I do shootin at prairie poodles! I am looking at brass catchers right now. When I find one I like, I'll let you know.

I use one from J&T Dist. It cost under 20.00 and works great. I had to buy it since Bennie kept complaining about the taste of brass and the possibility of chipping his tooth.

What I told Odie was it looked like I was break dancing in his front seat when he was shootin his ar with all the brass flyin around. I am especially fond of the ones that go between my legs when I'm shootin out the other window, adds a whole new meaning to light my fire. The place Odie got his is www.jtdistributing.com. You will have to call it is not listed in their on line catalog, the number is 1-888-736-7725.

I believe Bushmaster sells one that is hard plastic that snaps on. I bought one for a friend of mine that fit his mini-14. He uses it to shoot coyotes and hogs from an ultra light airplane. The prop is right behind him, and he wasn't comfortable ejecting that brass into the prop. Can't say that I blame him there. He say's it works great.
Good Hunting
