Well i finally picked up the phone and ordered me a new .223 barrel for my encore. Now i need to know where i can find some inexpensive loads to shoot in it. i have heard some of you talk bad about the russian ammo and the steel cases what is the scoop on them? if any handloaders have a pet load let me have the recipe so i can try to make me some. bozowise i saw you tell someone about dallas reloading how can i reach them? what power scopes do you folks recommend for coyotes under 300 yards that would also double as a good p dog scope out to the same range. thanks for the info. I'd stay away from the russian as it is corrosive and steel cased. You can get the Dallas ammo for about the same price and it is great ammo. Are you near FortWorth? They sell it at the gun show booth, but they are a police supplier and rarely sell to the public except at the shows.
I can ship you some if not.
What length barrel do you have? I would use a 3x9 for the coyote's but I prefer more magnification for the p-dogs. You might consider something like a 4x14 for a good inbetween power.

bozo i may get in touch with you a little later about the ammo. i may just start from scratch and order brass and start with handloads from the beginning. especially now that cav sgt sent me a recipe. for the scope i sure like the burris compact 4-12. cav sgt the barrel is 26 inch i dont know what the twist rate is. it is a thompson center heavy stainless barrel from the custom shop. so whatever the standard twist is for a .223 is what it probably is. like i said above this barrel is mostly just to play with. i will do some coyote hunting and some crow shooting. also maybe one of these days i can make a trip somewhere where i can shoot some p dogs, that just seems like it would be so much fun. thanks for the info it is much appreciated. 9850:
The Winchester 40 round Varmint Pack with the 45 Gr HP is pretty good 223 ammo. It runs $9.99 per box at Academy in the Houston area - a little more at Wally's mart.
It shoots exceptionally well in one of my 223's - so well that if I plan to take that particular rifle PD shooting, I stock up on the stuff prior to going and don't try to reload for it.

Hunter feel free to give me a shout if you need load data on the 223. I've got pages of info on real world testing.
I love my 223's and many have seen more then 750 rounds in a day at the p-dog lands.

Guess its a good thing I'm going to load up on ammo ;D if 700 roundss in a day for a shoot is standard then I might have to open up a ammo factory

hunter? have you purchased your scope yet? ever looked through the mini 4x12, its alot of money for the scope and the quality is not that great, ok for a compact but you could do much better with that 300 bucks. Premier reticles has they're leupold vari-xIII's on sale as does midway and a couple other shops RR

i took bayou city boys advice and went to wally world and bought 200 rounds of winchester 45 gr hollow points they shoot really well. this will give me some brass to start reloading with. right now i have a leupold 3.5-10 x40 on it but it cant stay permanantly as it has a place to live. i dont know about the compact burris scopes but in my experience with the 3 burris scopes i have they are better than the leupolds i have owned for less money. but i have given some serious looks at the bushnell 3200 and 4200 scopes right now natchez shooters supply has them on sale. anyone have any experience with them? im in no hurry for the scope i have all summer to get a permanant scope for it.thanks for all the help. You might take a look at this site for glass, I found it by mistake the other day looking for a weaver scope for my 250. www.Binoculars4Less.com I have not had any dealings with them so as far as customer service? prices looked very good and there are a couple other sites that the guys on this site have mentioned so do some searches on this site and see what you come up with. Later, Kirk S.
