I was just wondering how many of y'all use your AR 15's for large game? I'm just getting into predator hunting and bought an Armalite this fall for coyotes and such, but hadn't really considered it powerful enough for pigs. I guess if you limit your shots to 'behind the ear'?? I have several rifles that I use depending upon what game I'm hunting and even have a scoped Ruger Redhawk for pigs... I'm gettin' scared that my AR might end up replacing all that stuff! The dang thing is accurate and much more fun to shoot than any of the others!! It's not custom-yet. I have a 16" heavy barrel (I like the Armalite because the gas block is set further out on the barrel=more reliability) flat top with an Aimpoint CompM2 red dot scope, and a flip up rear sight. When I get a few more pennies scraped together it'll get a trigger job, free floating carbon fiber handguard, bipod and I'm not sure what else yet...
Great board!!

I use an AR for deer and bear hunting, not your typical AR though, its chambered in 458 SOCOM caliber, a ballistic twin to the 450 marlin. All the power than will go down the magwell of the AR15 lower RR

Holy Guacamole!! I went to the website for the .458 and I MUST have it! Looks like the Marlin's gonna be gathering a little dust...

Which site ya on pyle? there are at least 2 builders of this round that I know of. I've hunted with mine 3 seasons now, have harvested 3 bucks, 1 doe and a bear. Out to 200 yds it has no peers! But if you wanna reload buy factory loads from core bon and reload those, forming basic cases for it is a nightmare! Guess you'll really go nuts when ya find out AR's are also available in 243 WSSM ;D RR

Dangit! I knew joining this board would somehow result in me running afoul of the spousal unit! Luckily she can't tell one from the other.... Anyway I followed the first link you sent. I may have to let sleeping dogs lie for awhile. In the meantime I always have my hot loads for the good ol' Marlin-ouch! It's a great gun though-it's an 1895SS which is the longer one, it has a magna-ported barrel and I mounted a Cabela's Pine Ridge scope on it. It was really nice to shoot with factory ammo, but this summer I started loading some 405 grain bullets and hopping up the powder charge. Not only is it a sledgehammer again but it'll deafen you if you're not wearing hearing protection! Somehow I'll manage to get by...

I routinely hunt hogs with an AR-15. Shot a 265 boar at 130 yards Saturday. Killed a nice little 95 lb. cull buck at 230 yards Thanksgiving day and have shot coyotes, crows, and multiple hogs with it. It really is my "go to" gun. I use both a scope mounted flat top and a standard field grade AR-15 depending on the degree of accuracy needed. The scope mounted rifles shoots 50 gr. Vmaxes and the other shoots 62 gr. Winchester Power Points. I especially like the standard model as it is light and weather proof and very well suited for general walking around use. .223 or .450 Marlin, always shoot them in the head/neck region. Shot placement is everything on feral hogs. I made a one shot kill on a 190 lb. sow with a .17 HRM by shooting her between the eye and ear. Shooting them in the shoulder or behind is a sure bet that your going to be doing some tracking, regardless of what you shot him with.

HI pyledriver i have a AR-10 in 308 i love it on hogs at night i never tride it on deer. p.a semmi autos are not alowed but there ant nothing like stalking up on 250lb hog and getting 10 yards and turning on the night scope and running red tracer down 75yard to a big hog.

I have shot quite a few hogs with AR's chambered in 44 Rem Mag, 440 Corbon Mag, and 50AE. They all work just fine.

welcome tony, guys if ya want a custom AR built, the man who posted above is the guy to do it. He can build an AR with prairie dog accuracy and grizzley bear stopping power. RR
