Yesterday I was fortunate enough to see how the new toy would work out in the field, and I must say I was very pleased.
Around 9:00pm I got my first shot at a coyote with the .223 WSSM. She was quartering towards us out about 150 yds when I let a 55 gr. ballistic tip put the SMACK on her. Right behind the front shoulders with a flip and 1/2 twist. ;D I was surprised that the exit hole was big at all - kinda expected the ballastic tips to leave a pretty nasty mess but they didn't. I shot a couple rabbits with it and they looked like a was throwing grenades at them. Pretty messy!!
We ended up taking 5 coyotes on the night with all of us making some good shots. We did manage to let a few get away, but thats hunting. We will be going back out in a couple of weeks and I hope to see what kind of distance this little cartridge has to offer.

Congrats on a great hunt and on breaking in your new rifle. The BT's are great until you hit a shoulder. As long as you make good shots they do the job. I like the 50's in my 22-250. Keep us posted.
Good Hunting,
Bob

I concur Bobcat, the 50gr BT pills work best in my weatherby 22-250. I'm interested in what this new kid on the block can offer though!!

Hey Capt, Do you have a 22-250? If so how do you rate performance between the new 223 wsm and the 250.

Bozo,
I don't have a 22-250, but both of the guys I hunt with do and I have to say that in my personal opinion the .223 WSSM hits harder. Two of the coyotes that were hit first with the 22-250 took another round before giving up the ghost. The two I shot with the .223 WSSM were dead on impact. All three of us were shooting factory 55 gr bullets. Both are great varmint rifles and in all honesty I went with the .223 WSSM just to be different. I still need more time out in the field to give a better review of either cartridge. We hunted this past weekend but without any shooting its hard to compare the two LOL!!!
If my post about busting bunnies offended anyone please take note that my give a crap is broke and it doesn't look too good on getting it fixed!

cdngunner, FYI-Captkb was talking about shooting jackrabbits, which you can't eat. They are a nuisance animal here in Texas and are routinely shot. They make great practice for shooting at moving targets. He was not shooting cottontails which are delicious. We shoot those in the head and eat 'em. Bob "Because of a preference for sparsely vegetated areas, this species often concentrates in pastures overgrazed by livestock, further depleting the vegetation. It has been estimated that 128 black-tailed jackrabbits can consume as much range vegetation as one cow or seven sheep. Thus, when these rabbits are concentrated, often as many as 154 per square kilometer, they conflict with grazing interests."

Sorry boys! Its just up here(in Canada) that we have been beaten up so much that I cringe every time I read or hear about stuff like that.
No offense was intended

cdngunner,
I must apologize for my comment back. Its been one of those weeks and I should not have made that comment. I get pretty fired up at times, especially when it comes to peta.
fisherman,
I do plan on reloading for my .223 WSSM once I get enough brass and a set of dies. So far this is what I know about this new little cartridge. 55 gr ballastic tip 3850 fps @ muzzle and 3065 fps @ 200 yds 1810 ft lbs @ muzzle and 1147 ft lbs @ 200 yds 22" barrel with a 1-10 twist
Mine is a Winchester Super Shadow Model 70 and its a dream to carry and shoot. I was real surprised at how light it was compared to a Remington model 700 in 22-250. Right now with factory ammo at best its shooting just under 1" groups at 100 yds. Not what I like but I figure once I get to test some of my own loads it will come close to shooting some ragged one holers. Thats just my own personal thoughts and time will tell.

Sorry boys! Its just up here(in Canada) that we have been beaten up so much that I cringe every time I read or hear about stuff like that. No offense was intended Hey Cdngunner - its time to take the offensive on stuff like that. Remember - you're the one with the guns!!! ;D ;D While I was just kidding about that, those people base so much of what they say and do on poor logic. It may be superficially appealing, but after some analysis, you can poke some serious holes in it .... You have a lot of friends up there. Form a a team and go after those idiots before you lose any more of your toting rights. OK guys, I'll get off the soapbox again! ;D

.....that is faster than I run the 55 gr. pills in my 22-250. I have them shooting at 3600 fps. I can get up to 3700 fps., but that is what my rifle likes.
Enjoy the new rifle!!
Good Hunting,
Bob

Did some calling this weekend and took the .223 WSSM back out to see what damage we could do. One of the guys with me was shooting his 22-250 with 55 gr ballastic tips and I was shooting the 55 gr ballastic tips in the wssm. Lets just say the 22-250 was ALOT more fur friendly!! Right now when all you can get is $5.00 to $10.00 for coyote hides then it really don't matter. The landowner of this place said we could shoot all the hogs we saw, and as our luck would have it we didn't see any. Curious to see how it performs on a hog. I am definitly taking the rifle out with me on the members hog hunt in June.
