Possibly a "dumb" question, but I've got an Olympic that looks like a copy of an AR15 and it has a red dot scope on it. I want to put a regular scope (3x9-40 Leopold) on it but I'm wondering about the sighting in. It's .223 caliber. The scope will sit about 3.5 inches above the bore and if I zero it at 150 yds what is the point of impact going to be at 200-250 or 500 yds?? I've never thought about this much but really like the rifle for daytime shooting/open sites, and want to start carrying it at night too. Any input appreciated!

bronc only dumb queston is the one that isnt asked!,in my experance the 223 is extremely flat shooting, following the USMC procedure for sighting in iron sights, starting at 50yds(or 30mtrs)deadon will give a pointblank range of 300yds,not sure what the holdover would be at 500

Hey Sarge! Appreciate the response. Thanks. I'll start out as you advise & set up several targets at different ranges and just play awhile. again; thank you.

Hey Bronc,
Sarge is right. There are no dumb questions. The trajectory question is also answered by Sarge and then should be double checked for your specific load.
However, the reason I responded is a situation that occurs with AR 15 Sporters and clones that utilize the carry handle A3 upper rather than a flat top configuration.
The carry handle upper will cause you to shoot low relative to scope cross hairs at close distances. Due to the 3.5" difference between cross hair and bore. This can cause a miss at close range shots (35 yds. & less) unless you hold slightly high. In quick, adrenalin filled situations your brain doesn't want you to hold high at that distance. So to me that's worth some practice at closer range.
Check out recent post of Byron South's where his brother shoots a bobcat at extreme close range. Those kind of shots do present themselves. The carry handle height difference bothers me only at close ranges on small targets.
