Fellas,
I took a friend calling this A.M. He doesn't have to be at work till 8 A.M. I am self imployed,so we try to make a set or two in the morning once or twice a week.My friend is new to calling this year,so a hunting partner of mine and I have been taking him and doing the calling. This morning we hunted near some R.R. tracks.Just as it was getting light,a train started with its wistle about 1/2 mile away.I had two different howlers with me,so I went to work talking to the train.Well the coyotes in the area answered right back.I got them pretty cranked up and then I stayed quiet for a minute and then went to the distress call. Here they come;right up a draw about 150yards from my friend.Well,I have my friend carry a little squeeker to use when he sees something comeing in.This way I now whats going on if I can't see in his direction.Next thing I hear is lip squeeks.I am confused,is one almost in his lap????Then boom.I picked up my high pitched howler and went to my version of a wounded coyote. As I'm looking for number two he says"my guns jammed,he's going up the draw".I moved to his side of the bush and saw one breaking land speed records in the wrong direction.I barked a few more times and he slowed to a trot near the top of the hill.I took a 'hail mary',and sent another educated coyote back to the gene pool. After all the action,I ask my friend what happened. He said after his squeeker froze up(45deg),he took his first shot and missed(approx150yds).When he went to chamber another round, the spent brass hadn't cleared the action, and jammed his gun.He then pulled out his squeeker and handed it to me in a hand that was shaking like it was scrammbling eggs.
I am writing this short novel so you will have all the facts.Have any of you had any problems with the REM.700 223 jamming?I thought I remembered seeing a post about it once. The gun is not a year old yet,and he says this is the second time.He was shooting factory REM. ammo.
Oh yeah, once I was able to get the squeeker out of his hand,it worked fine for me.Maybe his mouth went dry?
