I would think that your Contender in .223 is some serious coyote medicine. Your limited only by your ability to shoot accurately, and from what I've seen from Contenders, that shouldn't be a problem. Please let us know how that rig works out for you.

When they first came out with the Encore, I bought one with with two barrels. A 30-06 and a 22-250. I figured that this would be a good combination for bear and cat hunting, and easy to pack on a ATV. I packed it around in a holster on my chest. It was in the way. I could never shoot it as accurately as a rifle, so I sold it after a couple of years. I had to give the 30-06 barrel away, nobody wanted it. I think it is just as easy to pack a rifle. When it had the 06 barrel, it belched a fireball that looked like one of those WW11 battle ships. Bob

Kyode
I have hunted them a few times with a Contender in 6mm TCU.....haven't scored yet. I usually don't hunt with a partner these days and I find it much more difficult to use a handgun when calling without a partner......I don't like to educate coyotes and, since it takes me much longer to get on a coyote with a handgun, well, the coyote usually wins........not the outcome I work for!

the load i'm using in the 14" .223 is with blue dot powder(reduced recoil). this is allowing me to use a 4x12 simmons riflescope on a handgun. i'm hoping the field of view will let me get on just as quick as i can with a rifle. BobR, i wish you still had that 30-06. so you could give it to me. ;D handguns take a lot of patience, and lot's of practice. i'd say some would call me a dingbat. i get those looks sometimes. but i enjoy it, and thats what it's about. would you believe, i think i can hold the 14" handgun as steady as i can a rifle? probably not(believe), but with my sling wrapped around my left elbow, it sure felt good during deer season. i shot 2 does offhand(with sling aid) at 50, and 75 yards. hit point of aim on both deer.

.223 for coyotes is plenty. I have been hunting them for years with a XP 100 in .221. with 50 grainers. I have a Leupold fixed 4X power EER scope and the XP also has a Harris bi-pod to help hold it steady. If you have ever used EER / handgun scopes before you realize the importance of holding it still as the scope will black out if you move just a little. I have been using a Fox Pro with remote lately, and can't say enough about it. Being away and down wind from the caller has been paying off as it gives me more time to get ready with the handgun. Don't quit and keep at it, you will be glad you did when you take the first one.
