OK Kelly and Aggie - you guys have got me thinking about taking up bow hunting. Say my old rich Aunt Fannie passed the bar and left me 500 bucks or so and I went and invested in a bow, some arrows and a quiver (those are the only bow hunting terms I know!) What should I buy and why?

ICMCumin, you need to go to a reputable bow shop and shoot a few bows. One of them is gonna feel better to you than the others and thats the one you should get. I can make some suggestions as to which ones to try. I am shooting a Buckmaster G2 and I really like it, other good brands are Hoyt, Matthews, the list goes on. I don't know of any shops in your part of the world but they've gotta have several. For the quiver, get one you can take off the bow when your on stand, thats my personal preference anyway. I shoot carbon arrows because they are either straight or broken. Aluminum can be bent just a bit from hitting something and it really throws the arrow flight off. WHEW!!! now any questions??

Since you asked ;D what type of broadheads do you prefer and why? Then what would you use on HOGS?

I have used both Phantoms which are a 4 blade and Thunderheads which have 3 blades. I've had good luck with both but have had one instance of the Phantoms planing in the wind. I'll be shooting T-heads on opener!

Hey ICM, I wont repeat what kelly already said but I can tell you I had a Hoyt bow that hung on the rack for several years. I finally heeded everyones advise and kelly and I went to a proshop there by his place. After shooting a couple bows that were set up "properly" for me there was no question I was going to go bow hunting. It felt good, was fun to shoot, and the guy at the shop was extremely helpful and didnt make me feel stupid with all my questions!! I bought the Buckmaster G2 as well and will be shooting the same arrows and heads as kelly listed above.
Hey, I smell a group bow hunt comin on!!!! ;D

Group Bow Hunt,I'm in. but they rite,go to a good shop and try some out,one thing I found out is I often wondered why some bows were say 200.00,some 300.00 some 400.00 etc, cause to me they all looked basically the same. Well to me the more they cost,in most cases the smoother they shoot, you want a smooth shooter cause any vibration or torque is your enemy and it will stop you from trying before you ever start. Jack

The last thing I needed was a new hobby now y'all have me looking at bows. I talked to my neighbor and he's going to let me try his Mathews Q2XL this weekend. Have any of you tried this bow. He's been using Easton A/C/C Hyperspeed arrows and 85 grain Rocky Mountain Titanium broadheads for deer and hogs. Any other recommendations as to try?

Hey Coondawg, go to the archery shop and try'em all!! I will warn you that if the neighbors has a different build (i.e. longer or shorter arms etc) his bow won't feel right for you. The setup is fairly critical in making everything come together. You gotta try the Buckmaster G2 series, less than the Matthews and other big names with all the performance.

Ok lets get to the good part. What deteremines what weight /broadhead design you choose? I'm so confused now, looking like a pretzel. Who makes the Buckmaster G2? One ad said Bear, Jennings and another one said Buckmaster. Did find one in the classifiied for $325.00 NIB seems about right. Going to Acadamey later tonight to try them out and see what feels good.

CD,
Go see Fred Ramirez at The Bow Shop and tell him Bob Connell sent you......then duck!
Fred bought out Viking Archery. They have an indoor range and have leagues you can shoot in to learn. One of his shooters is the 3 or 4 time world champion.

Coondawg,
The G2 is manufactured by Bear/Jennings and is part of the Buckmasters line. I own one of the first models of the Buckmaster line and it has been a fine bow. My brother and another buddy own the G2 and really like the bow. Good luck finding the bow you want, and shoot often.

Garrett nailed it, welcome aboard Garrett!! Coondawg, the broadhead weight is pretty much personal preference. I prefer 125 gr because I want to deliver the most energy I can. Now there are heavier weights available but you really need to be shooting a high poundage, over 70, to deliver them effectively. Have a good time at the shop today!! Oh yeah, don't forget the checkbook
