WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF BOWHUNTING! You are gonna love it! About the mechanical broadheads, Some people love em some of us don't! have tried them and will not hunt with them again, They fly wonderful, But if you happen to hit shoulder hang it up, They lack what it takes to penetrate bone, It's kind of like they try to open up and get stuck in the bone or something, I have lost two deer with this type of broadhead and won't go back, I'm shooting a 65 pound Darton bow at just over 300 fps with a 100 grain 3 blade MUZZY broadhead, I have hit one in the shoulder square and went thru it and busted the shoulder on the other side, Any other shots are a complete pass thru. I have talked to people also that have made shots on an animal that is hard quartering and it will deflect when it trys to open! But then some people seem to have no problems with them or at least don't say they do! this may not have helped you much but at least you know another side of the story

My dad and I have always used thunderhead 100's. We love these broadheads. If I take my bow turkey hunting with me this year I'll probably use mechanicals but I don't think I'll ever use them for deer. If it ain't broke, why fix it?

For deer and other light skinned critters I use T-head 125 gr and if its hogs or such its 125gr Phantoms. I love both of them. I've never turkey hunted so I can't offer any 'advice ) on turkeys and mechanicals. However, I've heard of enough problems with them, I'll probably never spend money on them. Ya just gotta try some different ones out and use the ones you're happy with yourself. Oh yeah, welcome to a new addiction, you're gonna love it!!

I have used 100 gr. Spitfires for about 5 years. I used 100 gr. Thunderheads before that and 125 gr. Delta Snuffers before that. The Spitfires have performed perfectly for me.
The main problem I have heard on some other forums is they lack penetration. Here's my experience: I have taken 7 deer and one Black Bear with the Spitfires. With a 64lb. bow I have shot clear thru 6 of the 7 deer and the bear. The bear was a big boar that just barely missed P&Y. The arrow went thru him and stuck in a tree stump deep enough it was hard to get out. The deer that wasn't a pass-thru was quartering away and I was 25 feet in a tree stand. The arrow went in next to the spine and down thru the chest cavity. The deer went 40 yds. The arrow had less than 12 inches sticking out. This deer weighed 182lbs. field dressed and grossed 156 and netted 133 7/8.
I have hunted with a bow enough to know that there is no broadhead that is consistent when hitting bone. They all will do some weird things. A friend shot a big bull elk in Colo. perfectly broadside with a Muzzy (well-known as a bone cruncher) behind the shoulder in what appeared a perfect shot. When he and his guide recovered the bull the next day they found the Muzzy had hit a rib behind the shoulder and after slicing half the rib it took a 45 degree angle turn and stopped with about 3" sticking out the opposite flank.
Just use whatever you want and put it where it is supposed to go.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

When mechanical braodheads first came out they did have some problems with them so I didnt try them then, well a buddy of mine talked me into trying them this year(wasp jackhammers 100gr.)and I loved them I killed 4 deer this year with them the farthest one went 14 paces and dropped dead,I watched every deer drop this year,so no tracking but if you did I would say a blind man could follow the blood trail, they bleed like a stuck hog.And penatration was straight through even the one I spined all the way down and out through the brisket,I shoot a bear whitetail legendII,with 70# draw weight.I cant wait till next year.
