“Crossbow Hunter” 3-D shoot
The increasing popularity and acceptance of the crossbow as a legal and legitimate hunting weapon in the United States and Canada has created an opportunity for a new type of competition.
The Shawnee Outdoorsmen club located in Southern Ohio has seen a need for such competition, and wish to announce the introduction of a “Crossbow Hunter” 3-D shoot to their club activities. The club has included the IBO x-bow class in it’s shoots for several years, but due to the limitations placed on crossbows for IBO competition, and the market trends toward heavier and faster hunting crossbows, the Shawnee Outdoorsmen would like to introduce a new set of rules for a new “Crossbow Hunter” competition. Our desire is to limit rules as much as possible and, “If it’s a hunting crossbow - it’s welcome!” is our goal. We want to insure a safe environment, and a friendly atmosphere where crossbow hunters can come to meet and compete on a friendly level, enjoy seeing old friends, and make new ones. Perhaps share a few hunting stories and hunting tips. With that goal in mind we have assembled the following guidelines:
“Crossbow Hunter” Competition Rules
Due to variations of legal draw weights, power stroke, etc. in different states & provinces any crossbow that is marketed as a “hunting crossbow”, and legal for hunting in any state or province, will be acceptable for competition. Custom or aftermarket accessories such as levels, slings, silencing devices, and replacement stocks (e.g. - a wood laminate stock replacement for a factory synthetic stock) are acceptable if legal for hunting. Arrows must be within the manufacturer’s recommended weight range, diameter, and length for the crossbow they are shot from.
Shooting sticks, monopods, bipods, or any other form of artificial support may not be used in competition by able-bodied competitors.
Crossbows may or may not employ a magnification sight. Whether a pin type or scope type sight is used it will not employ any range finding capability.
All crossbows must have a working safety. Safety is to be kept in an on position until shooter is at stake and ready to fire. No crossbow will be cocked before shooter is at the shooting stake; it may then be cocked and loaded in a down- range direction. Crossbows will not be loaded in an upward pointing position.
It is the shooters responsibility to be sure that his or her crossbow is in sound working condition.
Competitors with any physical disabilities may use any accessories necessary to compete, but the necessity of use may be subject to verification by the shoot directors.
Adult men will be shoot from the green stake with a maximum range of 45 yards. Women and juniors will shoot from the yellow stake with a maximum range of 35 yards.
The shoot will be conducted under IBO rules as far as time limits, mechanical failures, range etiquette, scoring, and competitors conduct.
We are limited by the forested, hilly terrain of our grounds on offering a course for physically challenged shooters, but will put forth our best efforts to at least have a partial course for everyone to enjoy.
We hope our attempt to have a 3-D shoot for all “crossbow hunters“ is accepted, and enough interest generated to turn this first shoot into a fun filled weekend event. Primitive camping is available on our grounds, and a cook-out with the possibility of a hog-roast is planned for Saturday evening.
This first shoot is planned for Saturday, July 17 and Sunday, July 18, 2004. The grounds will open at 9:00AM Saturday and registration will begin at 10:00AM The course will close at 4:00PM each day. Each day will be a separate competition, with small payoffs to the winners each day (number of payoffs depend on the total number of competitors) and a Grand Champion trophy for the highest combined score from both days will be awarded Sunday evening. Entry fees will be $10.00 per day.
If you are interested in attending please contact us in advance. Driving directions any additional information you might need or want will gladly be provided. We hope to be hearing from you soon!
