OK guys, you've got say three hundred bucks and you want to buy the best scope possible for that .17 Rem, .222, .223, 22-250 (or other) that you varmint hunt with. What scope manufacturer; what power('s', if its a variable) and what features? And why.........

Dang Bobcat, how do you sleep at night? You list a lot of great glass, but alas, no Leupold. Shame on you for overlooking such a great scope!

Hey DG, I just don't personally think that Leupold can compete yet in this price range. Even their new VX-II's, the only one in this price range, still only have 86% light transmission. For ICM's criteria, I still have to give the nod to those I listed.......... Bob

I agree with you regarding the light transmission, but the durability factor does play a part in the equation. Although I've never seen any of the scopes you mention fail, I feel confident of the durability of Leupold optics. I just hope that my new Burris Fullfield II holds up as well over the years to come.

Hey Sarge, I didn't list the Sightron II's in my list because I have not had any first hand exposure with them. I know they are a big improvement over the original models and the Sightron I's. The pricing is: SII VARIABLE 3-9 X 42MM PLEX RETICLE SATIN BLACK is $247........apples to apples pricing SII VARIABLE 3-12 X 42MM PLEX RETICLE ADJ. OBJ. TARGET KNOBS SATIN BLACK-$310 SII VARIABLE 4.5-14 X 50MM PLEX RETICLE SATIN BLACK-$328 Sightron: www.sightron.com/Bob

Hey Sarge,
I am counting the minutes as well! I am looking forward to peeking through those S-II's.
DG-Ok.....I know you are a life long Leupy man....very hard to argue with that. What would you recommend in the $300 price range in their line? I am sure ICM wants more input......

Well based on my non-scientific analysis (my eyes) of the new Leupolds, I would say that you could do much worse than the VX1. That line offers 2-7X33, 3-9X40, and 4-12X40. The bait that Burris/SWFA waved in front of my nose is what pulled me away from Leupold long enought to take a look at the Fullfield II Ballistic Plex. They are offering a free 20X spotting scope. So you end up getting the riflescope, spotting scope, riflescope lens covers, and a warranty that will stand toe to toe with Leupolds, all for under $200. I will always try to buy American made optics and firearms when I can.
Now Bobcat, even if this Burris turns out to the be the best scope ever made, I will remain a loyal Leupold fan, due primarily to their durability, and the way the company has treated me over the years. I guess you could say that they earned my loyalty. I'm just giving Burris an opportunity to do the same. WOW!---A COMPANY EARNING A CUSTOMER'S LOYALTY? Now that's a novel idea!!!!

i have owned a number of leupold scopes over the years and i now have three burris scopes. for the money dollar for dollar burris makes a clearer brighter scope than leupold.i have an old fullfield 3-9x40 that is 10 years old. i paid $169.00 for it brand new to my eyes it is a better scope than the leupold vxIII 3.5-10x40 that i bought about the same time for $375.00. i also have a black diamond 4-16x50 with the 30 mm tube that i believe will stand toe to toe with ANY scope made even the $1500.00 scopes and it only cost $550.00 shipping handling and all. leupold scopes are great scopes and very reliable but for the money burris cant be beat. Boy, I'm having to agree with you guys on the clarity of Burris scopes. I always thought that Leupolds were clear, but these Burris scopes are the cats *ss!
